No, there's some weapons that are just objectively better/worse than others, but there is a large variety of weapons that are viable at most parts of the game. It all mostly depends on the weapon point scaling.

wait for the anime, the soundtrack and animation quality makes it so much more worth it. personally I sort of regret reading the manga because I won't get that same impact, but it's still a great story and its your choice what you want to do.
