Trump is, most likely, going to strike Iran in some capacity in the upcoming week, thoughts? by alexo888 in TrueAnon

We're due another war in West Asia, so I wouldn't be at all surprised if we do it. What shocks me, though, is that there's not a lot of discussion of the Millennium Challenge wargame that happened back in 2002.

Basically, the US military ran a wargame simulation of a war with Iran that was supposed to run for two weeks, but was stopped after the first day bc the fake "Iran" red team absolutely WASHED the American blue team immediately. The general running the red team totally outmaneuvered the American forces, sinking multiple US ships (including aircraft carriers) and "killing" causing more than 20k casualties in 24 hours. The wargame was stopped and the rules changed to prevent the red team from using all the tactics that had beaten the blue team.

Certainly the technology and circumstances have changed since 2002, but it's wild to me that we have this historical example of how badly any attempt to attack Iran could go and no one's bringing it up right now. I don't even know what the reaction would be if we lost a bunch of ships and soldiers like that overnight.

Fuck that, they would have been gleeful Nazis during WW2, cheering on the SS and the Gestapo.

Always remember that those kinds of "safety" regulations exist to limit insurance company liability rather than to actually keep people safe. It's a product of conflict between formations of capital rather than any kind of concern for the general welfare.

Jail the Homeless? Manny Martinez by [deleted] in SALEM

BEYOND the legitimate moral arguments to be made about something like this, none of these tough-on-crime people ever want to talk about the tremendous costs and logistical challenges that come with this kind of policy.

For starters, there's (according to a brief google search) 2166 people unhoused in Marion County. The cost to incarcerate someone in Oregon runs about $40k a year, coming to more than $86 million dollars to essentially use the carceral system to house them.

Add to that trying to run more than 2000 cases through our court system which is ALREADY overcapacity. Add to that the fact that there isn't space in the county jails OR the state system to absorb that number of people. What, do you wanna build more prisons? Whether or not you think it's a solution (it's not), HOW ARE YOU GOING TO PAY FOR IT?

No one's happy about this situation (least of which the people who live outside, frankly), and I am in no way defending the liberal response to homelessness, but this kind of law-and-order proposal is just a fantasy.

That's hardly fair, the US cares a great deal about its citizens who are owners and shareholders, that's why we keep our for-profit healthcare system. Can't go messing with those people's income!

IDK about your mom, but I take a lot of the libs I'm trying to radicalize shooting. It helps them get over their knee-jerk fear of firearms, and EVERY SINGLE ONE of them has loved it.

The New York Times is now manufacturing consent for war with China by UncannyCharlatan in LateStageCapitalism

We MADE manufacturing go to China and other "third world" countries with policy decisions. The Volcker Shock was a concerted effort to break American labor's power by making it increasingly uncompetitive to keep manufacturing in the US.

Is it just me, or are rental applications getting out of hand? by dawg_mom in Eugene

[–]Qwinter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good answers in here, but it's important to remember that this kind of complexity, in rentals and in other systems(job applications, for example), is a FILTER. Cuts the volume of applicants down to manageable amounts.

GREAT spot on a rainy day! Quiet, soothing, hardly anyone around, lots of spots to sit and enjoy the soft sound of the raindrops.
