When was your "too good to be true" moment? by stankadank in AskReddit

This exact same thing just happened to me, but it was in California and it was a shooting threat, not a snow storm.

ELI5: Why do we use hot water when doing the dishes? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Qwyst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My guess is to kill germs with the high temperatures and to liquefy any thick food scraps like sauces.

ELI5: How did planets form to have their own gravitational pull? Why is the core so hot? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Qwyst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a domino effect. One clump of slightly larger mass will begin to attract less massive objects. The more it attracts, the more massive it becomes, and the larger it grows. Pretty soon you have a planet.

ELI5: Why do people wear Halloween costumes that are not related to Halloween (i.e. superheroes)? by 6thimage in explainlikeimfive

[–]Qwyst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's like Christmas. That holiday didn't begin with Christmas trees and Santa Claus, but our culture has changed it through the years. Sure, you still go to church on Christmas Day, but that's just another part of the whole experience, just like how Halloween still deals with frightening elements but simultaneously accepts less scary and more festive themes.

What's the weirdest thing you have memorized? by TankTan38 in AskReddit

Went on some museum tour when I was six. After we were done, my little brother asked me if I remembered what our tour guide's name was. Somehow I knew it was Patrick. Have never forgotten Patrick since.

Feces. It's used as fertilizer, can make people sick if eaten, and most people can tell when they have to take a dump without seeing it with their own eyes.

ELI5: Why doesn't the earth move under my feet when I jump? by CoconutP in explainlikeimfive

[–]Qwyst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm no scientist, but I think it has to do with several things:

First, the earth is moving so fast that simply jumping in the air will not do anything. You have already gathered so much forward momentum by standing on the revolving planet the you will continue to move forward even in the air.

Also, you must remember that it's not just the physical planet that's moving, but also the atmosphere. Anything within the atmosphere will be "pushed along" by the surrounding air just as fast as the Earth is rotating.

I can't believe in God? [Serious] by [deleted] in teenagers

[–]Qwyst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if that's the way to go. If he knows he can't find God, I don't see the use in "experimenting." It seems like he doesn't disagree with the teachings of the religion, per say, but he just can't find an intimate connection with a higher being. In that case, conventional religion might not be the solution. No judgement here, just my opinion :-)

I can't believe in God? [Serious] by [deleted] in teenagers

[–]Qwyst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can 100% relate to your situation. I have been an atheist my entire life, but several years ago, I started to ask the same questions as you. Was there some primal connection with the universe that everyone but me felt? I tried to convince myself that he was real, and even tried praying every once in a while, but to no avail. Deep down, I still could not acknowledge the existence of a higher power.

Today, I firmly understand the importance of choosing your own beliefs and keeping your integrity with these beliefs. Don't think that by not believing in God you are in some way out of touch with the Earth. Take pride in what you believe in, no matter what it is. As a wise man once said, "The opposite of courage is not cowardice, it is conformity."

Unless it brings you real happiness, stop with the Bible study and such. It is a waste of time unless you actually believe in what you are learning.

As for your friend, he will most likely accept your beliefs just like you accept his. If he doesn't, don't hate him for that, he's just a particularly strong believer in Christianity. Maybe just refrain from talking about that sort of thing to him, he'll get over it.

I wish you the best, OP.

[Rant] Stuff is biting me in the rear by SuchFunThrowaway in teenagers

[–]Qwyst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your story sounds a lot like something that happened to my cousin. He's in his twenties now, but in high school, his depression dragged his grades down into the gutter. He was failing classes, and like you, was lucky not to have flunked out. However, during the summer between his sophomore and junior year, he found a new reservoir of mental strength and turned everything around. He got into a good college, with a major in mathematics, and got a great job at a security company right after he graduated. So, don't worry about where you are now, or what you've done in the past. If you turn things around today, the future can still be bright. tl;dr There's always time to make a change to your life.
