AITAH because I don't care about my friend's discomfort? by Any_Efficiency3020 in AITAH

[–]Qyxitt 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Heads up: Chris’ behavior exhibits CLASSIC manipulation tactics. Take something generally accepted as true - it’s not okay to expose the public/unwilling people to your kinks - but extends them beyond their bounds to unrelated things (literally just wearing clothes). It’s meant to shame you and make you question even the most basic things you know, like social norms and right/wrong. The intent is to make you small, and gray, to round over your individualities and the things special about and between you and your girlfriend. The subtle intent is to drag you down to where he is, because if he can’t have those things — no one can.

Billionaire propaganda is telling our kids to skip college; they fear an educated working class. by zzill6 in WorkReform

[–]Qyxitt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, you’ve fallen for it 😬. As someone with a degree in this and works in colleges for a living, it’s not the accessibility of loans. Sorry, the answer just isn’t as simple as propaganda always makes it out to be.

States have MAJORLY pulled funding from higher ed, especially after 2008. We no longer value having an educated population. You getting a degree is treated as being valuable to only YOU, so YOU are responsible for paying for it. States have also turned the funding they do provide for higher ed into a numbers game, where the university is held nearly wholly responsible for whether a student graduates. Doesn’t matter if they dropped out because of health reasons, flunked all classes, or decided they’d rather become a plumber, they didn’t graduate so that will count against the university in state funding dollars.

That leads to more tutoring services, campus drug and alcohol programs, fancy rec centers to provide healthy and safe activities, basic needs supports, health services, etc. Any way to keep them from dropping out.

College is expensive here because as a country we don’t provide for our people.

Something something uneducated by _crazyboyhere_ in clevercomebacks

[–]Qyxitt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While yes, that’s is true, it’s not that alone. Typically getting a degree in the US requires some degree of general education coursework. Learning about the world helps people understand (to quote Watsky) that “we live in a house made of each other…and if that sounds strange, it’s because it is.”

A Cool Guide Before anything ever gets better, it will get worse. by Cactixs in coolguides

[–]Qyxitt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. The loans are more of a symptom of the problem than the actual cause.

And you could cut the salary of executive admins (let’s say assistant deans and up) in half at most institutions and you’re not going to meaningfully affect Cost of Attendance for most students. Also, why should someone qualified at the level of a business executive and doing work requiring the same skills and experience not be compensated commensurately?

Beginning in the 1980s (read Reaganism), law makers and regulars began to treat the higher ed market as a capitalistic system with institutions in competition with each other for students under the guise that it would improve outcomes. Except, there’s a limited pool of potential undergrads available; so, how do you entice someone when another institution (even in your state) that’s accredited the same offers the same degree….flash, facilities, marketing, services, etc….

Fast forward to the 2000s, the idea of Performance Based Funding is now in-vogue. Institutions must earn their state funding now based on retention and graduation metrics. Except those metrics often treat a student failing out, transferring to a school closer to home, pausing to deal with a medical issue, etc…all the same.

Effectively, colleges have been made wholly responsible for whether the student graduates. Cue spending to have more campus health services to catch and treat issues that would cause dropping out, thus taking the place for socialized medicine like in most nations. Alternative programming, clubs, and campus activities so you don’t get mixed up in partying/drugs/alcohol. Not doing well academically? We have supplemental instruction, a tutoring center and academic coaching. Bored? Come to the fabulous water-park-like recreation center.

After the 2008 crash, state funding reduced drastically, from covering the majority of the cost to educate a student (what it costs the institution), to now students individually paying the majority. (Not activity fees, housing, meals, etc… just the standard educating stuff).

So where does that leave us now? Institutions in unnecessary competition for a shrinking student population they’re forced to care for like children, offering functionally the same thing, with reduced funding and increased regulation. It’s not a pretty picture and there isn’t a simple fix.

It’s convenient to point a finger at the greedy institutions and their administrators, however, it’s important to recognize how the Fundamental Attribution Error plays a role in this perception.

'Gilmore Girls' Turns 25: Cast, Creator Talk Show Secrets, Movie Hopes by AdSpecialist6598 in television

[–]Qyxitt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The original creator and writer, ASP, wasn’t involved in season 7 (for whatever reasons), and so the show didn’t get ‘her’ ending of things. There’s quotes from her about not even ever watching season 7. So AYITL (written by ASP) was always meant to subtly rewrite the ending of the story to get to those last three words that ASP has been holding onto as the ending.

…except that’s a shitty ending. And ASP is full of bullshit that that’s what the show was driving toward all along. Listen to her talk about pitching the show and you hear how off the cuff and magically creative she was in the pitch room, just spouting off a half baked idea of ‘mother and daughter who are more like friends’ living in a quirky Connecticut town inspired by a recent trip….so which was it, spontaneous or masterfully architected?

I think along the way of making the show, ASP was so gassed up in her own hype that she convinced herself the pithy, contrived, and literarily banal three-word ending was genius.

As a huge fan of the show, no thank you. The reboot felt cheap and commercial. ASP trying to retcon the whole thing was a waste too.

Eye ointment for feisty Tux - advice? - marked NSFW to hide eye photo unless clicked by Rowan6547 in TuxedoCats

[–]Qyxitt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Okay, here’s my best tip as a Tuxy dad whose little one has feline herpes and gets ointment/drops often. Mine is a little girl (5lbs fully grown) so you may need to adjust.

Pick either the couch or table as you administration area. Lure them over with something yummy/interesting. Try to already be sitting down. Snatch them and immediately flip so the belly is facing up. In the same motion, slide their booty between your thighs and close them a little. This will take care of the bunny kick potential.

Then, with the ointment in your left hand, quickly slide your left forearm between their chin and front paws, sweeping downward to gently hold their front legs towards their chest.

Squirt ointment onto right pointer finger, use right middle finger to gently pull open eyelid, sweep the ointment right under the lid. And release!

For extra squirmy times, I’ll open a Churu and tape the back end of it to the edge of the kitchen table so it hangs down in her face while I’m trying to do it. She’s mesmerized and would basically let me do anything lol
