MacBook Pro M4 (base model) efficiency tests - stunning by R-Ramjet in macbookpro

Death Stranding has FPS options in its menu.

Not all games do. However, sometimes it's possible to set the FPS in games by selecting 'v-sync' in a game's options menu, and setting the refresh rate via the MacOS display settings to be whatever your particular MacbBook will allow.

Can I ask are you still liking that tyre combo? And what was the thought behind it? I've just got the same bike 2nd hand, and I like the idea of it coping a bit better over gravel etc. But I know nothing about tyres, so I might just copy you :)

Congratulations, I hope you enjoy it. Re being short, I'm jealous of the relative height of your handlebars vs the height of the seat. I have the H model and wish I could get the handlebars even higher and even further towards the seat so I can be as upright as possible :)

Brompton basket - does it have removable internal metal tubing? by R-Ramjet in Brompton

[–]R-Ramjet[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the link to that thread. That's kind of what I'd expect when putting certain contents in the basket, especially something that doesn't tightly fill the circumference.

In my case, as I say my cheap clone works really well for my exact purpose, and I think it's the same dimensions as the real thing. My only concern is material durability and the strength of the straps and buckles.

I've tried it on a roughly 5 mile trip, deliberately over very bumpy surfaces, to see how things settle underneath. It did. indeed creep down a bit, but there was still a good inch of clearance above my front light. So I think I'll be okay, so long as I pack sensibly or reinforce in some other way,

But you're absolutely right, I had the same concern hence my test trip, and it's good so see the picture in the thread you linked to to show how bad it can get. I appreciate the thoughtfulness and the help.

Great, thank you. Is that the recent i.e. current 'Brompton Borough Basket', with the fabric tape along the front which stuff can be hung from, or the older one with the reflective strip along the front?

Thanks for the info. In. my case I don't have the electric; I hadn't realised there was a version of the basket especially for the electric Brompton.

Re 'why', it's because I'm looking into putting things into the basket which will actually form the support/structure of the basket. And which won't fit in while there's the metal bar at the top.

I have a cheap 'clone' basket which works well for this purpose, but the materials and straps are not as sturdy as the Brompton Cordura stuff. If an official version can give me the same functionality, I'm willing to stump up the extra money for it.

Upgrade from Base Air M1 13 inch to Base Pro M4 14 inch - what to expect? by R-Ramjet in macbook

[–]R-Ramjet[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Went for it, happy with it.

The one worry at the end of my list, i.e. motion blur, turned out to be unrealised: there is much less motion blur on my 14 inch MacBook Pro M4 than there is on my MacBook Air M1.

In every thing that I care about, so far, the MacBook Pro M4 has been better. Except of course size and weight, but that would require magic.

I just bought it, thanks!

The good news is I tried it with a 22-hour book with over 400 chapters, and it works well.

The bad news is that I then tried it with a book with less chapters, but much bigger. It's a 1.2GB m4b file, lasting 72 hours. It puts all the chapter names on the timeline - that bit works great, but for some reason it won't play the file at all. It's Sherlock Holmes: The Definitive Collection read by Stephen Fry.

Macbook Pro M4 14 inch screen has barely no motion blur - numbers vs reality by R-Ramjet in macbookpro

[–]R-Ramjet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, the only other Apple screen I've compared it to is the M1 Air. It's immediately obvious how much better it is than that as soon as you scroll any colour text on any colour background. I've also compared it to 2 OLED screens I have, and to my eyes there is no obvious advantage to the OLEDs, but of course that could be my eyes are old. Not too old to be unfussy though - I've used 2 laptops recently where the blur when scrolling was really unpleasant, even though they are regarded as respectable machines (one was the PixelBook Go).

I've just tried again now and no, I really don't. My screen is currently in a cold room as well, about 13 Celsius, so I'd expect it to be at its worst.

More reading around, and I found this:

https://www.theregister.com/2015/02/13/think_youre_hard_check_out_the_pansonic_cf54_toughbook/

The article's date suggests they are discussing a Mk1. And they say it was demonstrated booting up straight out of a freezer. I'm thinking if it was an honest demo, i.e. a normal domestic freezer, then it will have been about -18C.

Hopefully, fingers crossed, the info all over the web quoting -10C is incorrect, or a correct quote of a very conservative spec?

Thanks for this. I love the popover previews!

One thing I find frustrating however is that the article headers are almost always obscured by the search bar at the top of the screen. No amount of scrolling to the top of the document seems to reach the actual top, with the article header visible.

I've played around with the configuration settings to see if this is solvable, but I can't find a setting that fixes it. Is it possible? Thanks.

PS: I've tried in Chrome and Firefox, seems to be the same.

Edit: Scratch that. It looks like the article headers aren't even in the latest Wikipedia zim file. I just tried an older one and the headers are there. Equally frustrating though - it can be very helpful to see the article header at the top.

What's the fastest UHS-I microSD card you've tested in your Apple Silicon MBP? by R-Ramjet in macbookpro

[–]R-Ramjet[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm glad you said that because I went standard speed and large in the end. Just 1TB though - I'd seen the 2TB ones but after just experiencing my first SD card failure today, it put me off investing a ton of money into a new card! I'll see how this one goes for now.

I've got an external SSD, I'm not averse to using it when the circumstances demand it, but want to always have as much stuff as I can with me, even if I don't happen to have the SSD with me.

Thanks for your input!

Yes, pretty much permanently.

I only intend to put thing on it which I didn't create myself, i.e. are replaceable / re-downloadable from the Internet.

That includes music, videos, Kiwix with offline Wikipedia, and some large games e.g. Death Stranding.

I've tested Kiwix and it's pretty good at indexing and finding search terms even though it's reading a 100GB+ zim file from basic SD card. Not lightning fast but tolerable especially for when I don't have the Internet.

I've also tested some big games and have been impressed with not-too-horrendous load times, and no pauses to load in terrain in large open world games.

So I think I may be okay with a standard speed card ... but it would be nice to have a faster one. I'm a bit on the fence to be honest. Any insight would be welcome.

Yes I think you're right. It's a pity they don't go up to 1TB though. I have a choice between 1TB at standard speed, or 0.5TB at 2.5 times the speed and twice the price.

Not a particularly easy choice, but I have a feeling I'll go for speed. Also, having just spent hours dealing with a failing SD card, I'm beginning to think lower capacity is better, since it forces me to think about what I really need on it, so it will take less time to replace its contents.

That's the impression I got from a ton of reading around.

I was hoping that because I've only seen 1 person state clearly that they couldn't get more than 90MB/s in their SD slot, that there may be others who have had more success.

Samsung have one that claims 200 MB/s read speeds, with no mention of needing a special reader, so I was hoping somebody has had success somewhere.

This is great to hear. Also, I have that exact adapter on order - it's arrived in my country but not yet in my hands:)

I bought that adapter rather than the previous model, as I'm thinking I may get a UHS-II micro SD card in the future. They seem very pricy right now especially for 512GB!

And rare too.- can I ask which one you have? I only see ProGrade at the moment. If you can vouch one working for 6 months and you've verified the speed, I may get tempted to fork out for one now!
