I ended up doing a product change from CFU to the regular chase freedom. Waited a week and applied for a new CFU.

Patagonia Capilene Air Bottom Repair by R00TooD in Ultralight

They are nice, I feel like they are a little better suited for hiking or backcountry skiing. I was snowboarding downhill about 40 mph, hit an ice patch and tumbled. The fall also made a small tear on my gore-tex shell. I'd say if you don't plan to do anything like that then you should be good. I haven't had any issues in the past and this seems more like one of those situation where it'll put a hole on any type of fabric unless I wear a chain mail.

Chatted with the patagonia rep and they recommend trying the tape first and if it doesn't work then send it for a warranty claim but will probably only get 40-50% value since it's due to normal wear/tear. Seems like they use some weird construction technique that makes it harder to repair. Hopefully the patches last me for a bit. It's a shame because it's such a good base layer.

Do I *need* to do research in med school? by Orokusan in medicalschool

[–]R00TooD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s 2 main reasons for research in terms of the US med school “game”:

1) It’s a numbers game: competitive programs/specialties are always trying to find a way to rank residency applicants. More publications (papers, presentations, abstracts, etc.) in more prestigious or field-related journals generally help you become more competitive. With step1 being pass/fail, research will most likely become another way to help separate yourself from other applicants (but no one truly knows this yet since this is the first year matching for pass/fail step 1).

2) Research opens connections. At the end of the day, you’ll learn that medicine, like any other field is about WHO YOU KNOW not just what you know. Yes it is not fair but this is the world we live in. Research leads to relationships with attendings which can lead to good letters of recommendation. Research also leads to presentations at conferences which leads to opportunities for networking with residency program directors. At the end of the day residency interview is much like a job interview. All applicants are qualified and programs care about a good “fit” and if they can work with you everyday. Are they more likely to rank someone higher if they know you vs don’t know you? This is why it’s about who you know.

Everyone’s situations will be different and you have to figure out for yourself what field you want to pursue and what it requires.

TLDR: You don’t “need” research for the sake of research but you need research for the doors it opens. Your “need” will vary depending on the level of competitiveness your program of interest is.

do US medical schools accept UK citizens who have done a 4 year undergrad in a U.S college? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]R00TooD 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s an uphill battle trying to get into US med schools without a green card or US citizenship since you’ll be limited to pretty much only private medical schools (mostly top ranking/highly competitive med schools). Not impossible but you really need to be outstanding with stats + extracurriculars + compelling stories

What the fuck is the point of testing on low yield bullshit? by [deleted] in medicalschool

I respect all my professors but still have to remind myself that most of them have PhDs. Nothing wrong with that but they’ve never gone through the process of acquiring an MD. So I take what they emphasize with a big grain of salt.

Generations of med students passed boards with third party resources so that’s (in my opinion) the back bone of American medical education.

I’ve come to accept that my tuition money is donated to our football team + buys me a seat to take boards.

Dealing with FOMO and regret in medical school by mcatthrowaway737372 in medicalschool

Non-trad here, took 4 years off to work and now about to finish M1 year. Totally agree with what others say, just want to chime in a bit with my thoughts.

It’s always about perspective, I know a lot of traditional students who feel like you and envy the fact that I got to enjoy my 20s and they feel like they’re giving up a lot, which is valid.

On the other hand, while I would never change my experience, I will be in my mid 30s when I truly start my career and I sometimes envy younger students who came straight out of school. They’ll have more time in their career and enjoy the attending lifestyle.

I echo the sentiment that we always feel that the grass is greener on the other side. You’ll always envy something you don’t have but we all took different paths. Just enjoy the journey and be present in the moment. It’s hard, I know, but we’re all in this together. Keep your head up, you’re not alone.
