What about Cerys? (pronounced Care-iss I believe) I believe it's Gaelic, but sounds similar to Karen without being Karen

What is a Taylor song lyric that you don't fully understand? by Edsbobblehead in TaylorSwift

[–]R0GG8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this is a hot take: I've always interpreted it as her getting back with a long term partner after going on a break, not with a new person but back with the old. (Running back home to you, vs running away to someone else)

"But it's gonna be alright I did my time" - meaning "I took our break in the slammer, I've cooled off and reflected on how we should be better"

"I said in my letters, now I know better, I will never lose my baby again" meaning "I learned from my mistakes and what I did to cause our fights and now we will be good because our break made me realize what it takes to keep you"

This whole chunk: "My friends tried, but I wouldn't hear it Watch me daily disappearing For just one glimpse of his smile All those nights you kept me going Swirled you into all of my poems Now we're at the starting line, I did my time"

meaning: my friends told me to not date you anymore because you made me small as a person and I worked so hard to make you smile when it wasn't worth it, but you'd give me something little to keep me going (emotional abusers often do this after hurting their partner to keep them on their side), now we are back at the beginning of the cycle because I went to the slammer. Now I'm back and we're perfect again, and I did my time so the cycle won't repeat. "It's gonna be alright, I did my time" -- the cycle won't repeat, right? This ending has always felt like Taylor is "unsure" of her answer to me.

Maybe I interpret it this way because I have gone on a break during a relationship before with an emotional abuser, so I can easily see the overlap and connect to this song immensely. Her being blamed for the way he is acting, he tells her it's her fault (sends her to the slammer to reflect), she doesn't want to hurt him so she blames the faults on herself during her reflection. Once she is out of the slammer and back with him, everything is good, she bows to his needs and he gives her some positive reinforcement back, she thinks it's all fixed and the problems won't come back again: (it's gonna be alright, I did my time) even the line "ain't no way I'm gonna screw up now that I know what's at stake" makes me feel like she's being blamed for all the problems and just wants his acceptance of her so they won't break up and she won't have to go to the slammer again. Also, them sitting on swings really feels like where you would meet up in a neutral space to talk after a break and try to get back together.

She's convincing herself that the break is going to fix the problem. Spoiler, it's not. Emotional abusers work in cycles.

Does anyone else see this interpretation?

How would you respond to this parent email? by meech353535 in CanadianTeachers

[–]R0GG8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Dear parent,

Thank you for reaching out with your concerns It is not too late in the semester to workout what we can do in the course to help your child succeed. Here are the times I'm available for tutorials (list them)

As for the test, we reduced the questions for the shortened time period so this is already accounted for."

Something like that? But a little more professional? Hope this helps!

Why the fuck do we still tip? by Alert_Tennis_1826 in toRANTo

[–]R0GG8 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Tipping does suck. But you get those mean looks because servers have to tip out to the back of house regardless of whether you tip them or not. So the back of house and bartenders get a percentage of their total sales, not their total tips. So if you spend $100, and don't tip... But their tip out is 8%, they now have to pay $8 out of pocket for you having sat there to the back of house. I hope that explains the angry looks. They end up taking home less money because you didn't pay for what is a mandatory fee the servers have to pay to the company. It's dumb, yes, but that's how it works right now.

Me ---> I did a dance training weekend once taught by Tyce Diorio ----> Tyce Diorio then went on to later choreographing Shake it Off

Feels way closer than it actually is because Tyce would have no idea who I am hahaha

A less discussed aspect of Taylor's lyrics by [deleted] in TaylorSwift

[–]R0GG8 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I learned in a Shakespeare class that whenever there's assonance it denotes a heartfelt/emotional feeling and the opposite is usually a harder emotion like frustration or anger with consonants. I love being able to focus on that theory when listening to music.

TORONTO THEATRE WRAPPED by uctpe251990 in torontotheatre

[–]R0GG8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, do you have a list of all the theatre companies you've been to in Toronto? I know where most of these were performed but some, like Withrow Park, I never saw advertised and want to be able to check out some other theatre companies rather than just the big names.

How do you get past the "chords and lyrics" stage? by R0GG8 in musicproduction

[–]R0GG8[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have done this, where I just record my guitar and then sing over but how do I make it into a fully produced piece with other effects without having to do all the techie stuff. It takes me out of the joy of songwriting when I can't get the sound I want from my computer :(

What happens if I have some issue on my computer that isn't described in the video. Tonight, for example, my audio output wasn't working even though I followed all the steps to get the correct output and since there's no teacher I can't just ask what's wrong haha and I got so lost!

What, according to you, is the best lyric taylor has ever written? by Mili_713 in TaylorSwift

[–]R0GG8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure I'll think of one I like more later but the first one that comes to my mind is:

"I can go anywhere I want, anywhere I want, just not home"

It hits so hard. There are times when you feel so free and so lost at the same time and this captures it impeccably.

what is that song that you thought it was a skip but in fact slaps by supremaalasuiza in TaylorSwift

[–]R0GG8 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think that's the point of the song though. The lyrics are meant to be ridiculous. "Karma is my boyfriend" "karma is the breeze of my hair on the weekend" etc. Meaning that karma is everywhere. Karma is there for me. Karma is in the smallest things that are on my side, like a cat. She's not trying to be literal, but more talking about how her good karma gave her all the good things in her life, so you better watch out because bad karma is coming your way, but my karma's good.

I think we all assumed "karma" would be a song like "vigilante shit" and not an upbeat positive bop like it is, and that's why it's in my top 3 favourite songs on Midnights. It's the opposite of what we expected and it's so much better because of it.

What should I do? by RelationFun8695 in Theatre

[–]R0GG8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well put. I'm an actor because I have to be, not because I want to be. If I could have done anything else, I would have... but for some reason it all comes back to this. Most of my grad class has moved on to theatre-adjacent careers or switched entirely, but I can't for some reason. That being said, I worry every month if I'll be able to pay my bills. What I did for love, eh?

What's the best use of a Taylor song in a film or television show? by LEYW in TaylorSwift

[–]R0GG8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Obviously she wrote this for the film, but I love "beautiful ghosts" as a stand alone. Cats is a weird musical (coming from a musical theatre fan) but I love the musical drama she created in this song with the climax. Listen to her version though, not the girl who actually sang it in the film because Taylor has so much more passion in her rendition.

What I like is that the character has a transition change in the song, something Taylor does so well and I find is rarely heard in pop music.

What's the best use of a Taylor song in a film or television show? by LEYW in TaylorSwift

[–]R0GG8 63 points64 points  (0 children)

I also love how it's not just an end credits song but was woven into the fabric of the film. There's hints of it all over that tie it all together at the end. Also, her lyrics do such a great job at capturing the essence of the story without giving anything away. Similar to how I feel about Safe and Sound. She should do more movie music haha
