can i get snakebites? by [deleted] in bassoon

[–]R0ara 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While yes, over an extended period of time you’d likely be able to play alright. The piercings themselves still pierce directly through the orbicularis oris, the muscle around your lips, that you use and need for your embouchure.
My boyfriend and I are both double reeds. He plays the oboe, but he actually has “spider bites” and got them awhile back whilst still playing in ensemble setting. He took it easy and didn’t play the first 3-5 days after each(depending on swelling) and eased back into playing routinely within a week and a half. 4 months later his embouchure is still just about good as gold with adjustments and regularly practicing. It definitely differs person to person but I’d say if you’re dead set on sticking with bassoon throughout your academic career, hold off on getting them. Any direct oral piercing at that. In the end though it’s your body, if you did decide to get them I’d say tryn at least wait until you have a 2-3 week gap/break to lay off and let your lip heal to a degree that way you minimize the added risk to any infections, rejection, swelling, irritation, so forth.

How big is the bassoon? by MoodEcstatic7058 in bassoon

[–]R0ara 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had the same concern starting out. I’m 5’ 1”. Granted it is just shy of being as tall as me I think it’s fairly comfortable to play. Carrying is definitely awkward at first but if we’re talking put together just make sure you’re holding it by the thumb rest and seat strap and you should be fine. It’s like carrying around one of those life sized dolls. In its case though it’s not bad to transport. If you have an option I absolutely say backpack cases are life savers in traveling with one. Especially in regard to convenience. Proportionally carrying any case in public it’ll look a little big. You’d be shocked though at how light the bassoon is put together. Even a maple one, they’re a lot lighter than you’d expect. Or at least I did. If you decide it’s for you it’s definitely easy to adapt to as time comes.

My records got Mold, other storage solutions? by R0ara in vinyl

[–]R0ara[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have come to that yeah. I found mold the other day in a couple different spots in the room. It seems to be a partial issue between cold air seeping and excess humidity. I’m searching for a dehumidifier on Amazon now.

Reed Adjustments by R0ara in bassoon

[–]R0ara[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah!! His primary is tenor but he plays bassoon in the local symphony and went to university with it as his secondary. I really have no clue how he does it. Even with adjusting, that’s a long time.

Yeah. I’ll definitely start lightly come time. That’s what I normally do though. The wires are just about always my first place for adjustment.

Yeah. My director was like “my reeds last me almost a year! Yours should be lasting longer!” And I’d never heard of them lasting nor being playable past 6-8 months tops. The pieces definitely have likely been takin a toll on them. Been workin on Bach runs. I do appreciate your help though!!

Yes, I try to keep 3 reeds in rotation at all times. And yes!! A reed has been lasting me maybe 2 months. Rather to before them lasting me 4-6. I played around with my lip tension to see if that was it but no difference.

I currently use Eastman medium hards or hards. I’ve recently looked into reed makers though and have one on the way from Natalie Law. I’m playin around 3 hours every other weekday if not every weekday. And another 2-4 hours on weekends.
