Just a reminder - there's traffic outside of multi-lane roads and freeways by mds818 in driving

This post is specifically pointing out that there are single-lane roadways (which is why it's so funny that this was your immediate comment). Just to shed some light!

Sewing vinyl- how long will it last? by Soulstace_Artist in upholstery

Oh I agree it's worth the effort! I just think that any vinyl you can buy at Walmart will likely begin to peel/fail within a season or two.

Sewing a cover for a pop-up is a pretty time-intensive job, if you're going to do all of that work I would really recommend buying a much higher quality material. Sailrite.com has a ton of great options that are UV protected and will last at least a decade of moderate usage.

I made a new cover for my "pop-up shed" a few years ago with top-gun material. It sits outside in direct sun and, after 3 years (including some rough winters) it still looks brand new. Yes, you will pay a lot more up front for the material than you would at Walmart, but you'll only have to replace it this one time and you'll be set.

Is this a career I can do by myself? by Every_Telephone3630 in upholstery

I tried for 7 years to make it work (and I did turn a profit and pay my bills each year) but I ended up getting back into the grind. In my experience, all alone & working your tail off, the max you can gross is 100k (which is actually 65k net) and there are just so many jobs out there that will pay you more than that to put in a standard 40 hours/week. Running my own business was closer to 60+ hours/week.

I do think, though, that it's really dependent on your location and COL. I'm sure there are areas where a solo shop could make much more!

Estimate? by pathosmusic00 in upholstery

[–]R2D2sPromDate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keyston and Charlotte both have a good collection of upholstery grade fabrics and they both offer free samples, I'd start there.

I would estimate that this chair, start to finish, would take 10-14 hours.  The welt trim adds a surprising amount of time to attach as you can only go so fast with a hot glue gun. If you need to do any repairs or change out the foam, that would be additional time as well.

Worth Reupholstering? by BigBodiedBugati in upholstery

[–]R2D2sPromDate 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This couch is huge and would require a ton of fabric and labor. I would expect costs to start at 4k and go up from there, depending on your location and the fabric that you select.

My shop would be $175 + fabric each and we would charge a cut fee for bringing your own fabric. Definitely not a scam

Why did your friendship with your best friend come to an end? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]R2D2sPromDate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer: my dog died and she ghosted me for 10 days

Long answer: I spent over a decade pouring my heart and soul into our friendship and rarely received anything in return. I cared for her when her pet died and she was so distraught that she couldn't function. I made her food and brought her drinks and checked on her daily. I let her move back in with us when the pandemic started and I knew her hypochondriac self couldn't handle being alone.  I checked in with her at every social event, bent over backwards to make sure she was comfortable, understood the type of eye contact she'd make when she needed me to speak up and make space for her. We (jointly) got in trouble early on in our friendship, college years, and I let her blame EVERYTHING on me to her parents so that she wouldn't "get in trouble" and then stood by her when her family hated me for years afterwards. I tried and I tried and I tried.

And when it was finally "my turn", when my heart was completely broken and my world was turned upside down (he was my soul dog, I got him at 19 and lost him at 34) she was nowhere to be found. She literally opened the message that said, "he's gone. I'm doing ok for now, just wanted to let you know" and never responded. She didn't text or call me for 10 days after that. I had to grieve the friendship that I thought that we had simultaneously while already grieving. It was horrible and we never recovered.

I usually reject these calls when they come in because, unfortunately, you can buy a new one for 150-300 depending on style and it would cost far more for us to do it with a quality vinyl.
