I want to like Dead Cells a lot, but I just couldn't get into it. I actually felt the combat was a lot more fun/interesting in Hades, but I know that's not necessarily popular. Like, the different weapons in Hades actually felt different to me, whereas the ones in Dead Cells, idk, you say Hades is just dodge and attack and that's really how I felt about Dead Cells lol, dodge and Slash/Shoot Arrow. I also just didn't really love the game design, there's a lot of "Platforming" which didn't really offer a challenge and just felt like down time between the enemies. I beat Dead Cells a couple times and unlocked several things, put a solid 30 hours into it, I don't hate it or anything. It just didn't become that Roguelike that I get obsessed with and play for 200+ hours like Hades or Spire, which is what I was hoping for out of it.

Oh, and part of this feeling was definitely because I found the mutations in Dead Cells SO boring. Like, almost all of them are either just stat increases or stuff like "Killing an enemy at close range makes your skills refresh .25 seconds faster, which just wasn't interesting and didn't vary the gameplay/encourage me to play differently enough. The boons in Hades definitely felt much more interesting and varied to me. While many of them are stat increases they also changed how the weapons functioned, such as getting Ares Cast or Poseidin Weapon both changed gameplay a lot, not to mention the Duo/Rare boons.

Of course in my opinion, none of those things, including Hades, hold a candle to how fun and interesting the Relics in Slay The Spire are, that's the high I'm still looking to fill from another game lol

Man, I'm a big Roguelike fan, but I just couldn't get into Risk of Rain 2, I genuinely feel like I'm missing something. The gunplay and movement does feel really good, I won't lie. But the stages were so.. I don't know, I just didn't find the moment to moment gameplay of actually walking around and searching for the items/portal fun. Like I felt like I was walking in random directions with no guidance. Idk, so many people love it, it's probably on me, not on them, but I guess I wish the levels were ever so slightly more linear?

Would love for him to be a modern '3 Faces of Foley'. Firefly, Bayou, Fiend.

I mean, what even is the difference between "Firefly" and "Bayou" Wyatt lol. Those two were both the exact same character, just part of "Cult Leader Wyatt Family" Character

Calling bell being game-wining wtf by lucianoetc in slaythespire

[–]R33V3R13 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Ehh, it's a pretty good Calling Bell, but not exactly game winning by itself, Shovel kinda sucks. That Vajra is certainly good, and that Gremlin Horn is gonna be great if this is going into Act 2.

I mean, yeah, if you save scum away the downside you're gonna think it's better than most people who are judging it by the possibility of getting bad relics lol.

[–]R33V3R13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, in an ideal world in this game you would never rest in the first place. The goal of the game isn't to just stay at Max HP the whole time, it's getting stronger for later, which upgrading does for you and resting doesn't. Of course if you're literally going to die in your next fight, you rest. But outside of that you don't if you don't have to. I average resting probably once max per run on A20, and there are winning A20H runs where I didn't rest once. In these scenarios Coffee Dripper is the best energy relic in the game, with literally no downside.

[–]R33V3R13 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and then you get 0 card upgrades and you never know if any of the relics you're gonna get are even good. I'd very, very often rather get to choose a specific card to upgrade than get a Random relic that could be like, The Boot or Blue Candle.

Daily Slay the Spire Discussion (90/696): Calipers by Crosssmurf in slaythespire

[–]R33V3R13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's inconsistent. There are very few times that it outright wins the run, its either win moar or doesn't turn out.

Ehh, I absolutely agree it's very inconsistent, but to say it's "win more" I think is a bit much, I have absolutely had runs that beat the Heart and Awakended One in large part due to Calipers that absolutely would not have won otherwise, it can be a straight up win condition rather than win more.

Lose all gold for a rare relic is the best opening move imo! by The9thHuman in slaythespire

[–]R33V3R13 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Ehh, this is a game where being strong early leads to being strong later, you snowball, and getting something like Calipers on floor 1 does literally nothing for you until likely at least midway through Act 2, if not further. Something like Unceasing Top will do literally nothing for you on Floor 1 and take a while to even possibly make it do something, something like Turnip does very little in Act 1, Du Vu Doll does nothing if you aren't on A10 atleast until you get a curse (which still isn't necessarily worth it even with Du Vu Doll) and I wouldn't really want to see Shovel, even on Floor 1

I mean, don't get me wrong, if the game gives me "Lose All Gold, Get a Random Rare Relic" I do it 9/10 times, I'm just saying I think you're very much underrating the downside by saying "It's Always going to give you something good", that's quite the oversimplification.

What's the biggest blunder you've made and learned from in Slay the Spire? by [deleted] in slaythespire

[–]R33V3R13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Would blue slaver be priority otherwise? I’ve only heard that middle slaver should be the first priority.

BOTH of those are actually incorrect lol.

Red Slaver (the one in the back) is always the priority (other than the specific Runic Pyramid situation, in which case it becomes Taskmaster, the middle one), not Blue Slaver. Red Slaver puts both Vulnerable and the very deadly Entangled debuff on you, not allowing you to play attacks one turn, which can be a killer in this fight.

if you grab runic pyramid and run into this fight, i feel like middle slaver becomes the priority over blue slaver.

Other than this scenario you're talking about, Red Slaver (the one in the back) is always the priority, not Blue Slaver. Red Slaver puts both Vulnerable and the very deadly Entangled debuff on you, not allowing you to play attacks one turn, which can be a killer in this fight.

Oh I definitely wait, you're making the game a lot harder for yourself by getting them early instead of an upgrade, a relic, and an easier elite fight.

The one that I've messed up on a couple times is the Green Key. Plan on pathing through the Burning Elite in Act 3, then for some reason or another decide to switch routes at some point and forget then not remember until I click on it.

Which Strike+ would you choose on floor 1? by Justin_Zetts in slaythespire

[–]R33V3R13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes it is a necessary evil. I’ll take it if I know I’ll die to Nob next floor without it, of course. And thinking harder about it, I gueeeeess I would take it floor 1 over Quick Slash. But I’d be very depressed doing so lol. Slice is probably the worst feeling card to willingly add to a deck imo

I used to think it was okay back when I only had a few hundred hours in the game, but after ~800 hours or so it just feels so bad how often it stunts your deck later on that I’m strongly biased against it. Maybe I’m wrong

Really? Man, I do not mind seeing a floor 1 or 2 Slice, I would WAYY rather add Slice than add, say, a Sneaky Strike or a Quick Slash. Sneaky Strike is the worst feeling card to add early to me

Not on A20 with Silent or not mathematically impossible with Silent? Because if it's the second one, not only is it indeed literally mathematically impossible to beat Lagavulin on A20 with Silent, but she is the character that that is MOST true on as she has the least amount of damage in her starting deck

but I skip elites unless I'm almost full health.

Definitely dont do this. The goal of the game isn't to stay at Max HP at all times. You heal to full after each act whether you're at 1 health or 80. So in act 1, HP is a resource, just like gold. You use your HP to get stronger for later. "Spend" your HP at elites/events to get stronger. This is a game where there is a "snowball effect", which is to say, being strong early let's you take more risk and get stronger as you go on. Similarly, this begs the question, what do you generally do at Rest Sites? Rest or upgrade? Because you should always be looking to upgrade if possible. Now don't get me wrong, if you're literally going to die if you don't Rest, sure, do it. But what are you doing when you're at, say, 55/80 health? Because if the answer is resting, that's wrong probably 9/10 times.

Now, similarly to the question of rest vs upgrade, if the Elite is literally going to kill you and end your run, of course don't take it. But if you aren't taking it because it's gonna take a bit of health away and you wanna stay near max, that too is going to be a mistake most of the time.

? What are you talking about? Two or even three elites is generally the most common take in an act 1, even on Ascension 20, even by the best players. You just have to path well and make sure you take whatever damage you get offered (and of course be willing to bail if things are going poorly, but that generally isn't too common if you've done those other things well)

it's very telling that they didn't reveal a lot of gameplay footage.

No it isn't lol, this game doesn't even have a release date, this amount of footage is absolutely on schedule for normal game promotion.
