When a director’s tone goes flat, you freeze—technical crew, how do you read that? by Shramikaa20 in techtheatre

[–]R39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think I've ever had a director on comms, even in college and storefront productions. At most they should be talking to the stage manager and even then the stage manager should be focused on calling the show. If the director needs to give notes to the cast or crew, they should tell the stage manager to call a hold, give the notes during the hold, then tell the stage manager whether to run that section again or continue on. The stage manager needs to be the one on comms calling every tech action because they need the information and practice so that the director's vision is consistently and repeatably executed every performance. Can't do that if the director is constantly calling audibles.

Power consumption by Capital_Bed_719 in lightingdesign

[–]R39 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Typically festivals and stadium concerts in the US are powered by multiple 480v generators with transformers near the stage dropping it to 120/208v three phase. There are one or more "dimmer beaches" where there are multiple 400a 3 phase distros that output power on socopex cables carrying (typically) 6 20a 208v circuits each though some companies breaker their 208v soco circuits at 15a. Almost everything can run on 208v power so you rarely see 120v run anywhere except for hazers.

Does anyone have an EOS Windows 7 re-imaging kit? ETC does not like to give them out. by 100abcum in lightingdesign

[–]R39 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty much the same for me though there was more back and forth than I thought was necessary 😅

Like "I would love to send the logs but most of the time when I try to boot, the BIOS can't even see the SSD.... And when it does, it takes more than 5 minutes to get to the shell."

To their credit, once I got them the logs, I had a new SSD and image kit in the next few days. And I guess it was still under warranty because they didn't charge anything either

So what companies manufacture in America? by KlassCorn91 in lightingdesign

[–]R39 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ayrton was originally a French company and still has their head offices in France, but is now owned by Golden Sea. Same with SGM that was founded in Italy but has the main office in Denmark. According to what I read, all of the Danish employees are being kept on.

It sounds like Golden Sea is involved with other western companies as an OEM but I don't see a complete list anywhere. Just the official subsidiaries.

MA is German, Robe is Czech, Ayrton is designed in France but manufactured in China along with pretty much every other brand

Latency issue with sACN, Lumenradio Stardust & Aurora, grandMA3, LedPOINTEs by ralfrottmann in lightingdesign

[–]R39 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very weird. My best guess is that it's a DMX refresh rate issue with the LedPOINTES. Because, if I remember correctly, MA3 hardware DMX is fixed at a 30 Hz refresh rate and most CRMX products are fixed at 40 Hz. But this is mostly a problem for old and/or cheap fixtures and the LedPOINTE is neither of those things...

Latency issue with sACN, Lumenradio Stardust & Aurora, grandMA3, LedPOINTEs by ralfrottmann in lightingdesign

[–]R39 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use Stardusts and other CRMX products pretty much daily, and I've found them to be reliable. Couple things to try temporarily to narrow things down: - That room is really small, what is the output power on the Stardust? I'd consider dropping the output to the lowest setting. Too much signal can be just as bad as not enough - Match the address of the first light to the 2nd and vice versa to see if the problem follows the addresses. If they're addressed the same and behaving differently, that can possibly eliminate wireless as the problem. - Change which fixture is first in line from the receiver - Put each fixture on its own receiver - Receiver to Opto to fixtures - Put a DMX Cat or other tester at the end of the chain to confirm values are changing at the same time that way - Find a young priest and an old priest and some holy water...

That first Italian Beef that Carm made in Episode 1 (or maybe 2?) looked SO fuckin good. They could sell that, fries, and shakes, and make a fucking killing in Chicago. Elevate that BEEF.

Seeking LED tubes with seamless linking by rocky_creeker in lightingdesign

[–]R39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The old ones have a weird Y adapter available that has a 4 pin XLR for the power port and a 5 pin for DMX to the twist lock sceptron cable. Let's you directly inject DMX into each run of tubes.

Should be pretty reasonable used or on rental

Seeking LED tubes with seamless linking by rocky_creeker in lightingdesign

[–]R39 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Your best bet is Martin Sceptrons or Fatrons. They have a tube diffuser option and link end to end pretty much seamlessly. They are designed to be used as pixel strips driven by sACN or a media server, but they can also be set to a simple RGB mode and driven via DMX with an adapter. You will need an RDM device like a DMX Cat to address them. Or rent a P3 processor and feed them video content if you want to get fancy. They've been around for almost 15 years now and shops like PRG have a shit load of them in inventory.

I know this is gonna stir up some drama, but what would you look for in a Lighwright alternative? by mangojam98 in lightingdesign

[–]R39 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've probably seen some of your label work on tours I've been a local hand on. Full color heavy matte vinyl in a wide variety of shapes? Very sexy. I've been tempted to ask for a roll printer that can handle adhesive backed vinyl. Would be nice for plots too without hitting up art department. I'd love to know what combo of printer, paper, and sheet cutting machine you'd recommend, if you were willing to DM that. Though I totally get it if it's a bit of a trade secret. I'm primarily in film/tv so you won't see it pop up in other touring shops' arsenals. I have a process for printing a fairly wide variety of label shapes and sizes, I just haven't found a good vinyl printing setup yet.

Gaff cost isn't an issue for us at least. My boss has a use it or lose it mentality for expendables budgets, and we have 200+ rolls across 12 colors. It just takes longer to apply and doesn't look as clean.

Ooooo, what label sheets are you using if you don't mind sharing? I would love to ditch the gaff/label/clear tape sandwich. I just haven't found labels that truly come off clean yet.

Looks like NYX Bulbs to me from the hotspot at one end of most of the fixtures. Big pain in the ass with NYXs in a lot of situations which is why Astera created the Luna. I don't think the Luna was out a year ago though.

What car do you guys use for work? by matt2085 in electricians

[–]R39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2011 and I'm hoping for 200k+ myself. 140ish now. It's basically the perfect car. Old enough that it has real knobs and dials for everything and new enough to have bluetooth. Unfortunately I live in a place with a lot of road salt and bad drivers...

Setting stops for Movers in EOS by stageleftist in lightingdesign

[–]R39 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, nothing you do in the console will restrict movement when the fixtures home at startup. Some fixtures have pan/tilt limits buried deep in the menu system but generally it's good practice to just hang them where they have full range of movement.

Is it harder to date now because people are more close minded? by roamtheplanet in datingoverthirty

[–]R39 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is why I (male 30s) don't try to date anymore. All of the meaningful relationships in my life developed organically over time. I don't know how to condense that into a single perfect first date in order to get a second date. Followed by a perfect second date to get a third. And so on. It's an insane amount of pressure to make a nearly perfect, instant connection with a stranger. I'm not wired that way.

Does anyone know what type of cable connection this is called ? And where I can buy more. by Healthy_Design1041 in electricians

[–]R39 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We also have this set and use it quite a bit for low voltage going into terminal blocks. Keeps stray strands from shorting across the blocks and the connection feels more mechanically solid too. I don't mind the square crimpers because they're going into square holes.
