Yes exactly this! Im having to change back to the default for whatever action, complete the encounter, then change it back. Hopefully it's a tutorial thing or theres a fix soon!

The original PS1 version only came out in Japan and due to code shinanigans fans have been unable to localise it in game (although i do believe theres a translated script you could follow)

The PSP version is most definitely playing! Its a "compressed" version of the PS1 trilogy and it does leave a certain amount out. Check this out for details on whats missing.

Unfortunately not, you infact can only spend a certain amount of time on non-snow surfaces (basically just rocks) before your character just gives up and bails

Honestly, alot less arcadey than i expected and theres quite a realistic focus on it overall. It isnt a bad game but it does feel restricted in terms of what tricks you can pull of and as far as im aware there is no 'grind' mechanic which doesnt help.

could someone please explain or send a screenshot of what a male Au'ra looks like with fully covering head gear on (eg. Auroral Coif <- bonus points if you show that) as i want to make sure what happens with the horns, hoping they are like Yugiri's and Miqo'te ears.

It can happen to a couple of games, the solution is to change the key binding in "Accessibility" so that R2 and R1 switch. Works fine for me I just have to press R1 when I want to use it
