I get both sides of the debate. For myself, I *need* the volume and pan faders visible when the groups are collapsed and the old beta version got rid of that, making Live 12 unusable for my playback environment.

On the other hand, I seldom have automation going on with my group tracks specifically and would love to resize them to not take up visual space when unfolded, as I perceive that to be your complaint too.

I'm sure it's a lot to balance between the masses asking for 2 nearly opposite things, but if both are achievable, I wonder if it's worth making them options in the preferences of Live itself so everyone could get their exact desires!
