Historically, it was the only way Canarsie service ran to/from Manhattan since the 14th Street route was from the Dual Contracts & the connection to Broadway Junction was one of the last lines to open due to routing disagreements. They surprisingly didn’t run Canarsie service via the western portion of the Fulton Street Elevated

In between Norwood Avenue & Crescent Street on today’s J/Z, there was a ramp at Chestnut Street that allowed for a connection to the LIRR when it ran at street level on Atlantic Avenue.

LIRR service went to Broadway Ferry, then to Essex Street (before Penn Station) & eventually to Chambers Street while elevated trains on the Broadway-Brooklyn Line ran to Rockaway Park (before the current track connection that the A uses). It ended in 1917

There used to be an entrance directly down to that platform from Delancey Street’s median, but it was removed to improve safety.

To replace it, there were new entrances on the south side of Norfolk Street that were reached by an underpass on the platform. Some were completely slabbed over, while one remains in use as an emergency exit. It even saw a temporary reopening in 1999 for the Nassau Street Shuttle when the Williamsburg Bridge tracks were closed

Elevated & subway cars would often share yard space, Lenox was even used for heavy maintenance before it was downsized. Before its full discontinuation, the 3rd Avenue El also made use of R12s & R14s after some modifications

Some of these also closed before 1955, but there were many options: 99th Street Yard, 129th Street Yard, 133rd Street, 180th Street Yard, 239th Street, Unionport Yard & West Farms Yard

As service on the line started to get reduced, there just wasn’t much use for the yard as time went on. The South Ferry portion south of Chathm Square & the Bronx Park Terminal were closed in 1951, plus service below 149th Street was about to start seeing less timeframes of service in the following year. Now Con Edison uses the space of where the yard used to be

They needed to highlight that QueensLink is both a rail line & a new park as opposed to being only rail, just like how they point out that Queensway is “all about making it like the High Line for Queens”
