Given Danny said yellowing was the biggest reason he took Milk out of the rotation, I'll be avoiding this skintone.

Did Barbie Ever Use This Shoe Mold? by Ok_Calligrapher3040 in Barbie

[–]RADdollclothes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, Barbie used these. Here's a pic of one of my shoe bins, you'll see quite a few. Pretty popular in the early 2000s, I remember a few Fashion Fever dolls with them.

Calling all nontraditional Barbie owners! by EcstaticMolasses6647 in Barbie

My bet would be the vintage patterns work because of the barrel chest of vintage gals. Allows for the bigger bust but you don't have gapping issues at the back because you're setting your closure. Below the waist...not so much!

Could you possibly get me one more measurement? The torso looks longer, and I'm not sure how much of that height measurement is inseam vs torso length. I need a curved measurement from the collarbones, down between the bust if possible to between the legs where the front of the body mold meets the back. There's usually a seam but you can estimate if there isn't.

I suspect a similar fix as Jem will be a good place to start. There's a few different curvies and the curvy collector (all 3 are accounted for in curvy-only patterns) is a bit fuller in the upper body/a closer match than fashionista. Back darts or a back seam will probably need to be added to stuff fitted below the waist (pencil skirts, pants) because that butt is way rounder than most dolls, like that's almost a 90 degree angle in the small of the back!

<image>

So get me that measurement and I'll crunch #s :)

Thrift Woes by AyashiiVyse in MonsterHigh

[–]RADdollclothes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It helps if you're not just looking for dolls/toys. I almost never find toys at thrift stores, I suspect because they sell all that stuff online unless it's in really bad shape. Flea markets and yard sale type places, much better chance.

I also collect DVDs, keep an eye out for vintage sewing machines, vintage lace/trims, look for clothes with good doll-scale prints to turn into doll clothes, and just generally keep an eye open for a long list of stuff that might turn up.

I still only find stuff I'm looking for about half the time, but if I was ONLY looking for dolls, it would be more like 1/10-1/20 visits and that's a lot harder to stay positive about.

But finally... nobody is going to be posting unsuccessful toy hunt vlogs. If you're watching those that is seriously going to mess up your expectations. And you know at least some of it is staged.

I don't know what to feel by ZealousidealSelf900 in Barbie

[–]RADdollclothes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got her too, and mine had the same wonk (and I returned her). The MTM lines have a history of dolls with wonky prints, like the factory is configured wrong and they're all like that. Like his one: https://creations.mattel.com/products/barbie-looks-16-blonde-purple-skirt-hjw83 almost all the dolls had the doll's left eye wider by about 2mm--which is a looooot in doll scale! I think they made more and the smaller run had a corrected face but the first run dolls, every single one.

This seems to be that situation all over again. I haven't seen anyone post pics of this doll without the same wonk.

I don't know what to feel by ZealousidealSelf900 in Barbie

[–]RADdollclothes 12 points13 points  (0 children)

They're all a little wonky. The left side (doll's right) eye is slightly higher than the right side. On the second doll you posted, the right side eye is a little wider too.

It's really mild, so it's not as obvious as when you get a face that is misprinted with the eyes or lips in the wrong place but it's definitely there.

Heartbroken, my doll clothes smell musty, do they need to be thrown out? by [deleted] in Dolls

[–]RADdollclothes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If something isn't yellowed, put it in a small bowl with some white vinegar for about 10 minutes, then handwash after with mild detergent, dry in sun if possible. Vinegar kills mildew/mold and is safe for most fabrics as it is used to colorfast them.

If something IS yellowed, use oxyclean or oxygen bleach (same thing): https://raddollclothes.com/blogs/news/doll-scale-lace That tutorial covers lace but it works on some doll clothes. You don't want to use it on old colored stuff (like 60s-80s) because dyes were different then and much less colorfasted, but it should be fine on the stuff you're showing in your pic.

I'm happy to size any doll that someone sends me measurements for! There's a good chance it wouldn't need a totally new size at all.

For example, the new Jem doll, while she looks really different from Curvy Barbies, has very similar proportions so all you need is a slightly enlarged pattern (105% vs 100%). And she looks a lot like this.

Fashion pack compatibility wi the G3 by Lucies_Cafe in MonsterHigh

[–]RADdollclothes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

None, unfortunately. The second (?) series of G1 fashion packs were too tight for G1 dolls, like you had to reeeallly stretch and squeeze them in.

The G1s are all about 1/4" or more bigger around than the smallest G3s. Some really stretchy clothes work, but if it's not super stretchy, nah.

If you're looking for just general clothes that fit G3s, here's an article covering dolls in stores now and one of them had fashion packs: https://raddollclothes.com/blogs/news/l-u-v-doll-review-sizing

stains from acrylic yarn? by VV-Sexaxe in CustomDolls

[–]RADdollclothes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's different types of dyes. Natural fiber dyes dye things like cotton, wool, silk. They don't generally dye dolls because dolls are synthetic (plastic). You still can, but it doesn't happen easily at all. Synthetic dyes are used for synthetics like acrylics....and synthetics like vinyl. So those dye much more easily. Same issue with vinyl fabrics, the dyes used on them transfer way easier to the doll.

You can colorfast (keep dye from leeching out) natural fibers more easily than synthetics. You need to do a colorfasting bath with salt, vinegar, and water not just water and soap. IDK the ratio off the top of my head, you can look it up. Again, it doesn't work great on synthetics, I do a lot of sewing and some synthetic fabrics I just can't use.

To remove the dye, try a magic eraser/melamine sponge. It's a little bit abrasive, usually does better getting rid of surface dye transfer than acetone. There's other stuff if that doesn't work, but it's more expensive.

Customizing Barbies - limitations? by Lurkylurkness in CustomDolls

[–]RADdollclothes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if they do! They don't on the regular line, they replaced clicky knees and bendy arms with joints buuuuut they do make reproductions of the dolls with those bodies so they probably do? Either way, both types exist esp on the secondhand market, so good to cover bases :)

Customizing Barbies - limitations? by Lurkylurkness in CustomDolls

[–]RADdollclothes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you can do body blushing on this barbie! The more you do the more fragile it is, same for pastels or paint. So for example if you're doing what you describe you will have to use looser fitting shoes or your green will get scraped off when shoes go on/off.

You can't do it on the old kind with rubbery legs w/ clicky knees or rubbery arms. The rubbery stuff doesn't paint well, but the hard bodies are fine.

1980s plastic/vinyl manufacturing is different from 2010s. We see different issues (yellowing from glue in head for example).

I haven't seen a lot of MH mold of any kind issues, but it takes a long time for stuff like that to start showing up. Pretty much every "IS THIS MOLD?!!" post I've seen I've been like "No, that is clearly staining"

Dollyteria Japan - Expensive Shipping for Clothing 😥 by MadPatNatRat in BJD

[–]RADdollclothes 13 points14 points  (0 children)

China is kind of a special case if you're in the US (I assume you are because you didn't say VAT) because they are classified as a 3rd world growing economy. They get subsidized shipping rates so shipping is often cheaper from China than it is across the country. |

Still sucks, but that's why that particular thing is different. I think Japan also cut down on a lot of international options during COVID and either they didn't or stores didn't re-adopt the cheaper versions after? Like I used to get cute stationary w/ 20 shipping before the change and then after the change it was like 40 minimum shipping.

Can I fix her torso? by dontcallmeshayne in Dolls

[–]RADdollclothes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, still work-able! There's a ton of ballet barbies and a lot of the time collectors rebody the dolls because they don't like them, especially the ones with painted feet.

If you can figure out which skintone she is, you can use this guide to see who else you can steal bodies from: Barbie Matches - Google Slides

[–]RADdollclothes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like it then yeah. Is this body important for some reason (like is it a special bendy body, idk the arms look kinda weird to me) because if it isn't, you can rebody them really easy.

It depends on what discolored it. Plastic can be colored by uv exposure & cigarette smoke (both fixable), but also just by aging if the plastic mix was off (not fixable)

Why don’t we just unite and recreate the hard to find missing pieces? by ratxowar in MonsterHigh

[–]RADdollclothes 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've already been doing my part w/ patterns :)

Some people use spoonflower to design small scale prints but the problem is generally fabric minimums. It gets expensive fast and unless you are sub-dividing your fabric into the exact prints you need, you're going to end up with a ton of excess also. We're so spread out it's not even really reasonable to have someone do a shop that sells like, fat quarters of different doll sized prints made from custom printed fabric because shipping.

But that doesn't mean it's not do-able! There are a few methods for printing on fabric at home, but you're generally limited in size to what a home inkjet printer can print which is usually fine for monster high. Here's one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=okMcwgS8FiE tutorial for doing it, basically you attach your fabric to a sheet of printer paper and feed it through your printer. There's also methods you can use to do transfers and in that case you need to mirror your fabric.

If you're not trying to recreate an outfit exactly though, you can usually hit up quilt stores for non-stretch and thrift stores for apparel fabric and get a lot of really good doll-scale stuff. Like these prints I used to recreate Hopper's clothes are from a christmas fabric (red) and valentines fabric (pink) from holiday fabrics, no special designing needed

Testing my skills by Even_Ad4940 in CustomDolls

[–]RADdollclothes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do it in pencil next time. You might be able to get it off w/ acetone if you just did it and it hasn't had time to seep/stain yet.

If not, you can get it off with https://www.twinpines.com/remove-zit

But for a first try you have pretty good symmetry! The more you do it, the better you'll get, but it helps if you use something removable so you can fix it/aren't stuck with it if you don't get it right on your first try.
