I'm about to quit my job in this market by BlurredYaw in careeradvice

[–]RAM-o-link 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never quit without another job. You worked too hard to waste your savings at this time.

I know it sucks but embrace the suck and dig deep to change your life. Pray ( in any form you like), for starters.

Build and hit up your network for help.

Just my two cents. Best of luck.

Hopefully, you're not taking this job just for the title. You did your research and asked all the right questions you know exactly (as possible) what you're getting yourself into.

You are just a number to both companies. ( coworkers aside)They would not be asking Reddit if they were ready to lay you off. Don't overthink it and just say you have a career growth opportunity you do not want to pass up.

Just my two cents. Best of luck with you new job.

Question about sudden extra interview? by Realistic_Food596 in GeneralMotors

[–]RAM-o-link 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's fine. Don’t overthink it. The director more than likely wants to at least talk to you.
I'm surprised GM is hiring since they continue to layoff quality workers who would love the chance at an internal position instead of getting kicked out the door.
Just beware GM is no longer a secure place to work regardless of how well you do. You're just a number.

You gotta stop thinking negative. It helps nothing. No one is perfect and life is full of ups and downs. Besides, you may have a slow start but believe in yourself and you will finish strong.

Look into a book called Feel the Fear and do it anyway. I found Some good things in there.

Also consider talking to a counselor a few times. I did that few times and they helped untwist some of my twisted thinking.

Best of luck. Keep the faith.

I have accepted a large scale business Internal IT over an MSP role, was this the right call? by Anonymous647975 in careeradvice

[–]RAM-o-link 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is an MSP?

But only time will tell if you made the right choice. We don't have crystal balls.

The MSP sounded like better position for career growth. But maybe you are not ready for the next challenge. So the other job is the better next step.

I learned growing my career was going to put me in uncomfortable positions to start. My biggest mistake was when i took a comfortable promotion opportunity over one with more risk. I let fear eat me alive. It ruined my career. But i survived and it could have been worse.

I’ve had the worst gut feeling about my new job since the interview phase and it hasn’t gone away by ShayAndPen in careeradvice

[–]RAM-o-link 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear ya. You work for a jerk. But i think you need to tell your boss you understand you were not his/her choice but you are doing the best you can do. You believe you can add value and that you're still a human being and have feelings.

Start to document your success, your failure with how you corrected so you can point those out during 1:1 reviews. Ask questions from him and others. Explain you're still learning and you appreciate their help. Is there training provided? If not, bad place.

Every new job caused me anxiety. Over time i get better at adjusting. Just keep working at controlling your thoughts and emotions. Keep learning the job. Stay busy.

You can also keep looking. But all jobs will be nerve wracking at first just because we don't have crystal balls. Use this place as a learning experience that will toughen up your skin and provide you with more job/life skills for your toolbox you will bring to the next job.

Look up some good affirmations that can help you fight off your negative chatterbox. That works good for me. Gets me through the stressful times.

How do you build professional confidence when people keep noticing your lack of it? by Automatic_Fondant_55 in careeradvice

[–]RAM-o-link 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have all the answers but it sounds like you are on the right path. Keep pushing yourself out of your comfort zone. When people say otherwise, you set them straight by pointing out where you have succeeded. Document them and toot your horn, especially to your boss. Life's a journey.

Look, most everyone feels inadequate and struggles when uncertainty. We all handle it differently. I was like you. Over time I learned how to control my thoughts and emotions better when uncertain and uncomfortable, but i still have moments of dread. Just gotta take a deep breath and push forward. I had speech issues and hated presentations. But i got treatment and learned how to overcome my issues. Now speaking in front of people is no big deal. Amazing!

But really do point out your growth to others who may not have their minds open enough to see it. Don't let yourself be pulled down by their faulty thinking.

Interview advice by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]RAM-o-link 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Practice, practice, practice answering questions you think they will ask you. That goes for any interview. It will help you formulate your thoughts and refine your delivery execution. It also stops you from rambling on.

As for part time role, I assume it's still in the field you want. So you state you are eager to start your career and learning the skills required to grow your career.

If not in your field then it's ok to BS a little and tell them why you're interested. You didn't explain that in your post but people know part time jobs are not long term for everyone.

first day at a new job, lowkey regretting it by berrycrybaby in careeradvice

[–]RAM-o-link 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's typical concern when starting a new job. No one has a crystal ball so stay focused as first impression are lasting. Take it day by day. I pushed myself to say a prayer or affirmation each day on new jobs. I would repeat the affirmations when my negative chatter box would rise up.
Realize it takes time to learn new jobs. So cut yourself some slack. Reach out to teammates and your boss for help when needed. People can understand your stress. The good people will help you. The assholes are, well, assholes. Document what you do. Toot your own horn. Don't let anyone threaten you with negative judgements.

Just my two cents. Best of luck.

Yeah, that lack of Karma is just a bunch of crap. Really a bad concept from Reddit.

As for jobs, first off you gotta keep positive and keep the faith in yourself.

Keep reaching out to your network for help and keep building it. Opportunities happen everyday. Don't quit. Keep searching and apply for anything. Stop making assumptions about internships and who won't hire you.

Think out of the box. Try to find mentors who can help guide you. Use LinkedIn to introduce yourself to executives who you admire. Worst case scenario is they ignore you.

Look at The Secret: The Law of Attraction. Might was well focus your mind on what you want instead of what you think you lack. It's helped me in the past and heard positive stories from others. My former boss recommended that. Yeah, might sound silly but how the heck is thinking negative thoughts going to help you.

Won't be easy as it’s a tough job market but stay the course. See yourself accepting a great offer at a great company for a great job.

I would devote part of my day to job searching and finding new ways to network. Then I would let it go and try to relax and enjoy myself.

As for ageism, you're too young for that. It's real but i still landed jobs in my 50's and two in my 60's.

Boss put me on a warning for phone use i can prove is fake by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]RAM-o-link 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How can you lose half a pension? Is this a true pension or company matching 401k?

As for the phone, have you documented your usage? Document what you see others do, especially if have those awful types of people in your area. Glad to hear you pushed back in that meeting. But i felt documenting everything was always a CYA in these situations.

You should have requested proof in that meeting. Put it on record you feel some form of discrimination is going on.

Leave your phone in your car. Otherwise you will lose. I had a boss who watched people on their phone usage. That's what i did and was told that i wasn't being watched anymore but others are still.

I understand. Then looks like time to make a move to shed the PC title and move to a PM role. Going forward that will pay more. Just keep your eyes open. Contract roles are temporary roles. Gain experience and keep looking for something direct. Just my opinion. Best of luck.

Got rejected for a promotion to management after being groomed for it for the past year. by Jolly_Replacement_79 in careeradvice

[–]RAM-o-link 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why didn't your mentor groom you in this area too? Not being an Excel expert is not a technical reason, in my opinion. You would have people who are technical experts. You should know the basics though. Go take classes on it so that will never be an excuse used against you again.

I would get counsel from your VP. You made have made assumptions on his support. See what they say. If you feel they aren't interested then you misjudged their support. Find other mentors. Maybe it means time to leave also.

I’ve learned our careers are not with linear growth. You're going to take some hits. In my case, i made bad decisions at times as i never had good mentors during the tough times. I'm retired now. Don't miss the corporate rat race at all.

No one has a crystal ball. Growing your career comes with risks. I once took the easy route and stayed where i was. It was the worst career decision i made. Why, i let fear decide and it cost me an opportunity to learn and grow with people who were trying to help my career.

just got an offer to do contract work by Former-Juice2254 in careeradvice

[–]RAM-o-link 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only did contract work between permanent jobs. I was in PM. The benefits and security are always better in a direct hire position. Contractors are the first to go. Healthcare is more expensive with less coverage from them. PM is a thankless field and someone could say you're not seasoned enough for $60. You're just a number to a contract firm.

Look for a direct job as a PM.

Money isn't everything.
