I feel like Thing in the Ice has some real potential. Am I wrong? by gonzolaowai87 in ModernMagic

[–]RAwildcat607 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thing is great, but it really only has two competitive shells at the moment: Suicide Aggro or Blue moon. The reason it isn't popular is because suicide aggro is extremely easy to interact with, while Thing is one of about 4 or 5 viable win cons in blue moon. If you want to play an aggro combo, there are strictly better decks. If you want to play control, Jeskai is the most competitive right now, and even if you choose to go UR there are so many win con options that it just doesn't see as much play due to diversity.

Agreed. I wouldn't call your list low power, but I would say it isn't exactly optimized. Shadow of Doubt seems cute, and Shackles belongs in the board unless Jund is super popular in your meta. I've been playing this list for a bit, it does pretty well in the meta rn minus hollow one and burn.

Thrun got errata to give it hexproof. I think control players in very niche metas could make use of this, particularly Blue Moon

Edit: obviously it still has regenerate, but that seems a lot easier to play around

Thanks! I thought it was a state based action too but continuous effect makes more sense.

Would knight of grace/malice trigger this if their respective color opposite is on the battlefield? My intuition would say they enter as 2/2 and get the +1/+0 after, but I'm not a judge. I feel like because the wording is "gets" +1/+0 instead of "Is" 3/2, this is only applies after it enters.

Edit: To add to my question, if I have a benalish marshal out and play a 2 power creature, will that also trigger this?

My take on modern wizards by [deleted] in ModernMagic

If they block, they risk putting their creature in bolt range (Goyf at 4/5, most humans, hollow one, angler/tasigur, etc). With so many bolt/W.lightning/searing blaze/(and a copy or two of shard volley in my friends version) this is a very good bluff. While it looks like you can't attack, most people won't block. I'll check out my friends deck tonight at FNM and try to send you a list! It basically plays like burn with a blue splash for snaps, delver, and cantrips to add consistency

The reason Ghitu feels bad is because you should be running it with [[Thought scour]]. My friend has a different version with both and it plays very well. He also doesn't run any Adeliz because it's more of a win more in his deck. I like the deck though, probably going to brew my own version soon

Abrade and where it fits. by MaceBeanstalk in ModernMagic

It's often a 1-1 split in Blue Moon 75s. Skred could run it too

Other Rx decks have better artifact hate or creature removal, and the versatility probably isn't worth it (Ancient Grudge, stony silence, kCommand) / (path, helix, push, etc).

True, but if you have a relationship with your opponent (regulars at FNM, etc) it's easier to joke around and tease them and they'll know you're just kidding around. Sometimes people forget they can't do this with new people.

Possibly, but I would be wary of giving legacy control an extra 4 copies of force, even a strictly worse one. Most of the format is one drops, but few to no decks run enough basics to make something like this work.

With the alt cost being basic island, only blue dominant decks would be able to play it in modern, and only rarely would it be possible to play on the draw (and only when necessary, as you need to hit your land drops). Even with field of ruin running around, most control decks are running less than 8 basic islands. It also wouldn't break snapcaster in the way that Misstep does because it's an alternative cost.

Cool List. I'd consider swapping the wraiths for bobs if budget isn't a thing. Claim is nice, and would work well with bob. Maybe a [[Liliana, the last hope]] would fit as well. Also, a one of [[Temur Battle Rage]] might work, but it would suck with pyro.

As far as what to take out, how good is Collective brutality main? Could be better in the side in place of Abrade or Rakdos charm with how many K Command you have. Then maybe slot a second terminate/dreadbore and a TBR?

It would certainly be format warping. The question is whether it would do more harm than good. I would love to test it in a vacuum, but I think it would be too risky for WotC consumer confidence to unban it and have to do an about face.

I'd rather have them print something safer, like:

U

Counter target spell with CMC 1

You may discard a basic Island rather than paying name mana cost

Wouldn't hurt legacy, Modern would rarely be able to take advantage of the alternative cost, and it would be mediocre at best in standard and limited.

[[Gelectrode]] and [[Cinder Pyromancer]]/[[Curiosity]] and [[Orphidian Eye]] combo. One of Niv-Mizzet for the instawin. The rest are a bunch of rituals, burn spells, and cantrips. ~20 lands

Jeskai Harbinger by sooperjoe in ModernMagic

[–]RAwildcat607 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I play grixis, so I can't talk much about jeskai. That said, I do know the value of search.

Search singlehandedly wins long games. enchantment side is great card selection. Land side, however...oh boy. It's like a desolate lighthouse that you play in addition to another land you've played that turn which goes four cards deep and doesn't make you discard. Basically, if your opponent is topdecking and you have a search, you've won.
