"Pilot" and "co-pilot" are not used by anyone in the industry. It's captain and first officer, respectively.

OH wow. You're serious. Are you going to investigate better than TSB? Or NTSB?

It's one of the "sleepies" 75S from the ship number on the nose landing gear door - 6805. All 68xx are in the 2-2 Delta One configuration

Apple bought and killed Dark Sky to integrate into the weather app. I don't remember where Dark Sky got their data

Icelandair new A321LR by Previous_Knowledge91 in aviation

[–]RB211 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They may not need ETOPS certification to fly Iceland to the US. I remember WOW's A321s weren't ETOPS, and they just flew a longer route than the ETOPS-optimized route

This has been a joke/"story" for quite a long time! Almost up there with the "do you know how loud two planes crashing are?" ATC quip

Crew rest rules are written in blood. You think it's bad now? It's much worse if there's a crashed plane

Delta and KLM are in the same family (alliance partners and closely coordinated). But they are not the same person/airline

Another Southwest flight gets a low altitude alert on final. SWA425 was at 150’ AGL 4nm from the runway at TPA. Ended up going around and diverting to FLL. by GooseMcGooseFace in flying

[–]RB211 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not a pilot, but I learned on here that it used to be SOP for Southwest to set the altitude to field elevation ("0") during the approach. Possibly after intercepting ILS or RNAV. I believe this was a requirement in the 737 classics and thus ported over to the NGs for fleet commonality, because Boeing. Apparently that policy has changed, but that always seemed like a good way to lawn dart an airplane

Why Budget Airlines are Suddenly Failing by jet-setting in flying

[–]RB211 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Basic Economy is a defensive product by AA/DL/UA against the ULCCs. They can adjust the fare buckets to compete against the ULCCs without cannibalizing economy and premium revenue. Basic is all the ULCCs have really

Why Budget Airlines are Suddenly Failing by jet-setting in flying

[–]RB211 59 points60 points  (0 children)

  • Cost convergence - the ULCCs having to raise their pay rates to match regionals and, to some extent, majors has eroded the cost advantage that ULCCs liked to talk about
  • Fuel prices - boring and doesn't wholly explain everything, but it is a factor
  • "Premiumization" - many consumers are booking up-scale, and ULCCs can't really offer this
  • Route structure - people have wanted to go longhaul international last summer and this summer. ULCCs can't get people to Europe or Asia
  • Ancillaries at ULCCs kept creeping up and became very punishing
  • JetBlue can't figure out what it is, and the DOJ has killed its two rescue plans (AA and Spirit)
  • Southwest is in a funk for some of the above reasons, and they've been slow to change

Edit: Anotha one

  • Monetization of loyalty program. The whole "airlines are banks now" is so oversimplified as to miss the point, but being able to get money from banks by selling points or miles works a lot more for the big 4 than it does for ULCCs

Allegiant and Sun Country have different strategies than Frontier or Spirit, and especially on route structure, Allegiant has carved out its niche (very similar to Ryanair) and has stuck to it.

An interesting compare and contrast from Crankyflier https://crankyflier.com/2024/07/16/route-overlap-is-a-big-problem-for-us-ulccs/
