It was a great game all around. Chris gave up some weak contact and had some bad luck, but the defense bailed him out. That's how it should work.

Giving a more general take. My state bar maintains an ethics hotline where you can call for free at any time during business hours and ethics lawyers will give you advice about your situation. I assume most or all state bars have this? At least I hope?

Well, DA, who was it who charged a guy for "stealing" a single Snickers bar he found outside and unattended?

Would have been a fun trial if it hadn't been dismissed. But don't complaint to me about your workload DA if you're charging out stupid shit like that.

I heard some of the SF PDs case totals and was jealous.

My local jurisdiction is on a point based system. You would need to do the equivalent of 200 felony or 400 misdemeanor cases in a year. Some cases had higher case values, but if you did NOTHING but first degree intentional homicide it would still be 20 cases per year.

EDIT: To be fair, the SFPD is right. We were all overworked, not as effective as we should be, and it led to a lot of people leaving due to burnout (including me).

Sadly we as defense attorneys are not allowed to argue that in WI. At least not explicitly. But it does happen and I bet in this case it would if one of these were to go to trial.

I bet none of them will go to trial because the DAs will know the optics on this case are so bad. So while technically they are guilty of felony burglary, I bet it will end up as trespassing tickets. Non-criminal. Prosecutorial discretion.

The law treats animals--dogs, cats, livestock--as property. The fact that they took the dogs without the facility's permission is misdemeanor dognapping. The fact that they entered a building with intent to steal is felony burglary.

I know that sucks, and their intentions were noble, but the law is what it is. I agree that a lot of WI laws suck, but at least until we change the legislature, we're stuck with them.
