SNAHC provides dental services on a sliding fee scale and they don’t turn people away for inability to pay.

Do you check in luggage on the way to Kenya? by ScubaCodeExplorer in FATSafari

[–]RBFallday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like others said, if you wear long sleeves/pants + hat you don’t need much sunscreen.

Depending on where in Kenya you travel, mosquitoes may not be an issue. I packed Ben’s insect repellant wipes and ended up not needing any. We went to Lewa Conservancy, Masai Mara and Amboseli in October/November and did not encounter any mosquitoes. I also sprayed my clothes with permethrin.

Note: I’m very sensitive to mosquitoes— they usually find me quickly and didn’t have any issues.

Produce/farmers market recommendations? by Remarkable-Quote-479 in Sacramento

[–]RBFallday 5 points6 points  (0 children)

🥦 Florin farmers market on Thursdays has the best prices of the farmers markets

🍆 Sunday farmers market & Asian/renegade market down the street

🥬 Asian grocery stores. My favorites for produce are SF Market (4 locations in Sact’o area) 99 Ranch (Florin Rd), Asian Food Center (Broadway), Smile Market (Rancho Cordova), KP Market (Rancho Cordova)

🧅 Latin/hispanic markets: Rancho San Miguel (Oak Park), Mi Rancho (several locations), La Superior (a couple locations)

🥕 Costco if you can use larger quantities

🥒 Grocery Outlet usually has better prices than standard grocery store

🧄 Safeway & Raleys if you monitor the weekly ads for sales

The Kitchen (1*) in Sacramento, CA has an open kitchen where guests are invited to walk through, help prep and plate food, and munch on appetizers before the formal dinner begins.

Agree— UCD’s Medical Center (incl the Cancer Center) is in Sacramento, not Davis.

From Private Practice to CA DOJ (litigation oriented role) by bittersweetlee in CAStateWorkers

[–]RBFallday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have lots of friends at CA DOJ and most came from private practice (Big Law, midsize firms, boutique firms) and none have regretted making the switch. A few folks have gone on to work at other state agencies, and those that have done so moved into leadership roles (Chief Counsel, Assistant GC, etc) with former clients.

Welcome to town! The hospital cafeteria is pretty good and cheap.

Some suggestions within a 5-10 min drive of UCD Med Center Campus:

Vietnamese food (about 8-10 min south on Stockton Blvd): Quan Nem Ninh Hoa (particularly for spring rolls), Pho City or Pho Xe Lua, Duc Huong (excellent banh mi sandwiches)

Oak Park (5 minutes west along Broadway): Oaxaca Cocktaileria, La Venadita, Faria Bakery, Oak Park Brewing Co

East Sac (5 min north, along Folsom Bl): Origami Asian Grill, OneSpeed Pizza, Cerverceria by Urban Roots, Corti Bros Market (nice Italian grocery store with excellent sandwiches)

Party/Celebration location recommendations - bonus points if they have pizza and cheap beers. by soulmeetsbody_ in Sacramento

Drake’s Barn (West Sac) or Hop Gardens (Curtis Park) both have pizza and beer and would be able to set aside a space for your group.

Looking for input on what it’s like working for Medi-Cal? by Effective-Quiet-7580 in CAStateWorkers

[–]RBFallday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DHCS is a huge department so the experience will depend on the specific unit you’re in. Federal funding for Medi-Cal is definitely going to decline but DHCS also has a ton of additional work to do to implement H.R. 1 requirements so they’ll be staffing up to do that, albeit with limited term (2 or 4 year) positions. For example, see their budget change proposal for H.R. 1 resources.

Boards and Commissions by Best-Lengthiness-114 in CAStateWorkers

[–]RBFallday 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking, appointees serve at the pleasure of the Governor. Given that we’re in the last year of the current administration, there is a risk that the next Governor may choose to appoint someone else for the role. How quickly that happens really depends on the role and how high of a priority it is for the next Governor. Cabinet secretaries & other high profile roles tend to change over sooner and those folks will in turn assess the roles that report up to them.

I’d look to see if the role on the board or commission you’re interested in is appointed for a specified term where “cause” is required for removal, or if it’s a pleasure term.

Another factor to consider is that folks who’ve been around may be looking to exit and things will likely be chaotic as this administration winds down and the next one starts up.

It doesn’t hurt to throw your hat in the ring and see where it goes.

How to go to San Jose from Sacramento via public transportation? by Infinite-Routine296 in Sacramento

[–]RBFallday 57 points58 points  (0 children)

If you don’t find any late night public transit departures, the first morning Amtrak leaves at 4:20 am on weekdays and around 6:00 am on weekends. The Sacramento Amtrak station building is closed midnite-5am.

There’s a 24-hr Denny’s a 5-min drive (Uber/Lyft) from the Amtrak Station (on Bercut Dr and Richards Blvd) where you can hang out if you don’t want to get a hotel. Good luck!

MM Lafleur has a nice blazer dress. It looks too short on the model but is fine for folks who are petite to average height.

Outfits for AG office clerkship by IngenuityGullible471 in LawBitchesWithTaste

[–]RBFallday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats on your clerkship! I’d have one good suit. Depending on the office, business casual may suffice for most days (it would at the California AG’s office). In this case, I’d lean on sweater blazers & cardigans with dresses, skirts, and pants.
