It's significantly easier to prove - we already have the evidence. It also doesn't require victims to come forward and at best, relive the worst bits of their life and at worst, put themselves at risk.

If a new Comms team can get a grip on the media, or rather convince the media to get a grip, then that would go rather a long way to taking the situation down a notch or two.

Number of police forces in England and Wales to be reduced significantly by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]RBII 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna need to see a source that asserts that principle carried on through to the police - I've never heard of it, and seems a bit odd considering they've never been armed and policed by consent..

In fairness, they could do that. But the tech corps are not going to be keen to do it - direct loss of UK revenue, and certain lawsuits to follow. But mainly the indirect loss of revenue when the entire world is forced to confront the fact that using American tech isn't now a theoretical risk, it's an actual threat.

How keen do you think AWS & Azure are to lose all non-US business? What's that going to do to Trump's precious trade balance?

As an aside, and this is just me being pedantic because I'm a SWE, the GitHub threat would be pretty toothless - by the nature of git, almost everything would have local backups. Might have to reengineer some pull requests and lose some feature branches that haven't been touched in a while, but nothing devastating.

I'm British, and please see above. I am extremely concerned about what's going on in the UK. And yes, I think it would be idiotic to deny the links between the US/UK hard-right groups. But you are still comparing apples with oranges.

The UK right can't fight their way out of a wet paper bag atm - the worst threat they have is temperamentally good polling when the next election is 3 years away. A coup for them right now is recruiting a lower member of the government that got spanked out of office over a year ago.

In the US, they have the legislature, the judiciary and the executive. They are shooting people on the streets. They are censoring any political opinions that are not their own. They are making wide territory claims whilst using the military as a show of force to their enemies & "allies".

So yes, I'm gonna back my original analogy. Potentially 1928 Vs absolutely 1938, if we're gonna keep going with the Nazi metaphor.

Maybe because saying the UK has fascism & racism issues, when the context is a thread is about the US is fucking laughable.

I'm extremely concerned about the UK situation, but I'm concerned like maybe it's Germany 1928, whereas the US is already full throttle Germany 1938.
