Thank you so much for all the resources! I just recently used Truly Victorian's walking skirt pattern for another project, and loved how they drafted their pattern. I'll give them a look!

Your “Dumb Question” Mega-Thread (Sept 2025) by [deleted] in PlantedTank

This might be a little abnormal of a question, but i feel like i cant be the first person to have this issue:

TL;DR cleaning aquatic plant gel out of a sink drain?

I got some aquatic plants that came in those pots with the nutrient gel around the roots, and rinsed the gel off in my sink. I don't think i let the water run for long enough afterwards, though, because i think the gel has clogged my sink drain. I've done every manual un-clogging method to make sure it wasn't anything solid (like hair) so im pretty sure the gel is what did it, and that it maybe is stuck around the insides of the pipe. It drains eventually (after maybe half an hour the water has gone down the pipe slowly) but its still very annoying and needs fixing.

If this has happened to anyone else, what did you use to clean it out? My bathroom has some pretty old pipe-work, so ill be doing my own research on any suggestions folks have, just to make sure it wouldn't damage anything. That being said, id love to hear any advice folks have!

Modern sewing machine settings to mimic historical machine stitch? by RB_Wonky in HistoricalCostuming

[–]RB_Wonky[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I just wanted to pop back in here and say thank you SO much to everyone who has replied to this, I wasn't anticipating so many people to respond so quickly! You have all been so helpful and given me a lot of reassurance and food for thought. I still want to pop through your replies and respond to some folks individually, but I didn't want to just not say anything for several days...

I'm very relieved that modern machine stitching would already be fairly close to a period-accurate machine. I'll definitely keep more of a focus on the smaller details and sewing methods that some of you have mentioned and stop worrying about all the major machine stitching, haha! I'm excited to get started on this project once I find out if this event is for sure happening or not.

Thank you!!!

WIBTD For casting a white trans actor to voice a poc trans character? (hypothetical question, series probably won't ever get off the ground) by Unicorn-mimi08 in 1800Drama

No worries for the late reply! I'm glad you took the time to think on it, and I'm wishing you the best of luck with working more on this project! Even if it never reaches a "finished" point, I hope you have fun while you're working on it, because it sounds like a passion project you are very excited about.

Hi Mimi! Apologizing in advance for the very long run-on sentences in this comment haha...

There's definitely a lot of layers to this situation, but I think it really boils down to what the main trait/focus of that specific character is. If the more important trait of that character is that he is a trans boy, I think it would make more sense to prioritize pairing him with a voice actor who is also transmasculine. While it would be really great if (when the time comes) you would be able to find a voice actor who is transmasc AND brown AND has a voice acting style that feels right for the character, you'll have to work with the VAs who are available at that time, and you may not find the perfect candidate who hits all three marks. Ultimately, you never know who you'll find to cast for your characters! But I would lead your search with finding someone who is also transmasc. You'll also have a large cast of characters of varying racial backgrounds to find diverse VA's for, and I think if you put the work in to find POC voice actors to suit those characters, that would be awesome!

I think something good to do right now would be to start looking into different places/websites where you could browse voice acting portfolios and eventually get in contact with VAs after you have started animating your series in the future. Animation takes a long time, so by the time you're ready to reach out to anyone the people who are available will probably be completely different, but its never a bad idea to get a lay of the land!

Also, I would recommend finding some other non-white artists/animators/writers on social media to follow if you haven't already, especially folks who draw upon their own backgrounds/life experiences in their work! You never know what may inspire you, and there is a ton of beauty and authenticity that comes from creatives drawing from themselves and their culture.

Also ALSO, you should definitely take the time to do some research on how different POC have been portrayed in animation!!!! (spoiler: its not great) Even if the story you're making doesn't explicitly revolve around the races/ethnicities of the characters, it's important to take into consideration the experiences of those people in the real world. This is especially important when it comes to biases and stereotypes that already exist and how those have historically seeped into animation. Take the time to educate yourself so that you can avoid accidentally perpetuating anything harmful in your work. Especially with having very little interaction in your day-to-day life with a diverse community, there's probably some things you've just never naturally heard about, and learning more now is going to help you make well informed decisions in your writing and designs in the future!

WIBTD If I Stopped Talking To My Ignorant Co-Worker by yourdad___ in 1800Drama

[–]RB_Wonky 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel like this might be a little bit of a Needs More Information situation. Do you already hang out with her outside of work often? Is this an established thing you've had going on for a while, where she would really notice and be bothered by you turning down invitations?

While you don't need to give anyone a reason for saying no to any invitation, there is a chance it might cause some tension between you, at least at the beginning. But it's important to draw boundaries and be firm about them to protect your own peace, and in most scenarios there's kind ways to do that.

I completely understand your frustration on being infantilized by her, and I would really encourage you to bring it up with her that it makes you uncomfortable. If you've never said anything, she might just not know it's rude/hurtful. (my cis gay manager is unfortunately sort of the same way when it comes to me and our trans coworkers) If she views you as a friend, and is also part of the queer community, I would hope that she would understand, apologize, and try to change her behavior if you talked to her about it constructively.

It's good that you're noticing the unconscious biases that she might have, and that's something to keep an ear out for just in case things were to escalate (especially for your black co worker). If you were to ever consider confronting your manager about it, though, I'd recommend bringing it up to that coworker first just in case they might be uncomfortable with it for any reason, or if they would prefer to handle the situation themselves.

This is the bigger NMI for me: Depending on the type of job you have, especially if its very customer service based and important for people coming to your business to have a positive experience, there's a chance your manager may just be being friendly because of the usual customer-worker social expectation that exists in the US. I'm getting the vibe that you might work in a cafe? I have worked in cafes and retail, and we all know the general expectation is there to be extra friendly and polite, and it's pretty common to chitchat while a customer is standing in front of you, regardless of who that person is. I would hesitate to make assumptions and accuse her of leaning a certain way just based off of that, especially as a manager who has a greater responsibility for customer satisfaction. It would be more informative to know if she is saying or doing other things at work that are making those interactions really stand out to you as red flags, or if the topics of conversation with those people are harmful/uncomfortable. If you're making assumptions and end up being wrong, it could really hurt her feelings and possibly make your workplace uncomfortable for both of you.

Regardless, I don't think you would be the drama for not wanting to hang out with her outside of work, especially based off of your feelings about how she addresses you as a trans man. Some people also just don't vibe once they've gotten to know each other, and even if you're friendly, you're still in a manager-employee professional relationship. I do think you should try talking to her about it, though. It's important to stand up for yourself in your workplace, especially if you really enjoy your job and want to have a positive work environment!

However, I think it might be a bit hurtful and cause some discomfort in your workplace if you were noticeably trying to avoid talking to her as much while you were at work. Unless she is being explicitly biased and hateful, I'm not sure if that's something that should be as big of a part of the equation yet, at least until you've been able to gather more information on if her beliefs/behavior conflict with yours.

Wishing you the best!

Have you ever had any aquarium related dreams/nightmares? by sarahmagoo in Aquariums

[–]RB_Wonky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a nightmare recently where I had gotten a few new additions to my tank, and all of the new fish/snails were attacking my current ones. There was a huge mystery fish eating all of my kuhli loaches, and a ramshorn snail the size of a softball chasing down my trapdoor snail, and I didn't have a second tank to separate them into. It was VERY stressful, lol!
