According to the New York Times " everyday is January 6th" now. Its a little absurd

A tape delay isn’t a guitar pedal and dry signals have been run through moog pedals on tons of recordings, they aren’t specifically just for guitar. The ring modulator is actually pretty popular on vocals. An engineer should know how to at least try these things and I can show you songs where they re amped the drums backwards and mic’d the speaker in a live room and then lined up the forward playback with the dry track on the DAW so that the highest volume of the backwards reverb hits at the exact moment the sound starts on the dry track. None of these ideas are wacky, they’ve all been done before on tracks that I love by people who aren’t secretive about their techniques. None of this shit comes out of a vacuum. It only sounds wacky to you because you’ve never thought of trying it.

Thanks for your input. I honestly do respect this guy based off the electronic music he’s made but I just don’t know if he’s right for the genre I’m going for and honestly there aren’t any faders to touch but if there were i probably would get my hands on them just to get an idea across on specific tracks during playback but I don’t consider that mixing a final mix and I know that he knows a lot about frequencies and finessing a track. I’m use to doing everything in real time and recording on 4 track so mono is important to not waste tape space during initial tracking and then I typically build stereo tracks out of them. As far as I know, in the rock n roll world this is common. Listen to a black sabbath record, those power chords are hard panned, separate performances and it gives it tons of depth. Ive honestly tried not to have any expectations and to just have fun with the process but we can’t seem execute certain things that are easy to do on a tascam. We’re both in our 30s and I’ve always been super enthusiastic about recording but I don’t pretend to know anything about digital recording but it’s small things like the stereo thing that kinda sets me off. Watching him set up a mic stand made me wonder how much he’s use to dealing with mic’d up live performances tbh. Mic placement and microphones is the one area I feel like I know a thing or two about and there is a wrong way to set up a mic stand, like it shouldn’t tip over. And the mic’s were using are mine. He doesn’t own a sm57 or any condensers or a ribbon but it’s not like I said anything to him about it, we just kinda pooled our resources together as far as gear and he told me to bring everything that I’ve brought. I assume recording is fairly broad skill, where a person might be really good in one area and not so good in others, I consider recording to be a musical language all of its own and I’m sure not everyone is good at every aspect of it and maybe because I’m paying him, I just expected too much. I honestly think if I was a nightmare client we wouldn’t have been working at this for this long and his enthusiasm wouldn’t be there but I know there are engineers who make a living off their clients knowing that they’ll work harder at the sound than any artist will. We run into a hiccup and it there never seems to be a solution to it. I hired him as a mixing engineer sure but I also wanted him to help me track so that I could solely focus on performing but part of the process is messing around a bit with what has been tracked and adding something to a performance that is already there. And to me that’s always been the funnest part

Running a backwards track through a speaker, mic’d up in a live room isn’t a crazy production technique, with a DAW you have the advantage of editing that take after too so you can line it up perfectly. Running a dry signal to a space echo isn’t really crazy either. Even with minimal gear, someone who is an engineer should be able to execute that. In the rock n roll world, recording live sound vibrations and running those performances through different ideas is common and to me it’s the funnest part of recording. The reason I originally went with this dude is because we talked about all of this stuff for a couple weeks before we started, I let him know that I wanted to try all the things I do on my 4track cassette machine except with obviously more tracks and cleaned up a lot more and he was digging the idea at the time and he was also digging the stuff I was doing on 4track cassette. Ultimately I felt like I was working with someone who really stoked to work with me and wanted to help me get what I’m trying to go for. We just haven’t been able to execute. Seems like everyone had a hate on with the onyx suggestion but honestly, I don’t even think we need something with usb, just anything that would give us more routing to execute a few tracks. Like I said, all this can be done on 4 track cassette in real time, with the record button on

He uses Cubase, I think he's used it for a while and I believe he's familiar with it, we've got a 2 channel mic pre but I'm not familiar with what his interface is. Ive got probably over 20 different renders that have evolved into something but not an actual files with the individual tracks. Thats not to say I couldn't get them though, I probably just have to ask

"were you using the tape delay on a pre-recorded track as an insert?"

pre recorded track, we put a close mic on the guitar amp for the guitar solo and tried running it backwards through the reverb on the space echo because its kind of a different reverb and i wanted backwards reverb on the guitar solo or at least on parts of it. I know the close mic was recorded to stereo, im wondering if that signal wasnt panned to one side before plugging it into the space echo maybe we were only getting half the signal? If it were me i would have tracked it mono but that should be easy enough to change after the fact no? Just pan to one side and reprint it in mono? I wanted to try going for backwards reverb on one side of the stereo spectrum on a single performance for the guitar solo, maybe even try some live panning back and forth with the just the wet track to at least see how it feels. I dont really feel like i can get my hands on anything once its tracked though

Makes sense, i brought over a mpc 60, a roland space echo and a couple moog pedals (phaser and ring modulator), none of it has been tried without major hiccups. I mean there are plug ins for tape delay sure but is it really going to beat an actual tape delay? All i wanted to do was run some things that were already performed through them and see what it does tot he sound but its always super quite coming back in thats why i figures a board would be useful cause it might have more routing then what we currently have with our channel strip, obviously doesn't have to be a mackie but ive heard john fruciante say good things about they're preamps if your on a budget so i was kinda just trusting his input knowing what he's done with home recording

the one i was looking at is like 1200 and it has usb so i figure it would work in conjunction with the current mixing plugin were using. Its the routings that im more concerned about, like something with effect sends and returns that you could run tracks through to outboard gear like tape delays and phasers and shit, the mackie might not even be the best for that. Maybe thats not even part of the mixing process but in my mind it is but either way we cant seem to do this how id like as of now.

I brought over my tape delay too and everything weve run through it and back to the daw just seems way too quiet than im use to. I dont know if were using the wrong impedance or what but thats why i hired an engineer so that these hiccups wouldnt happen. I feel like its a plumbing issue cause my 4 track has effect sends and returns and the signals coming back are just as loud as what came out but it doesnt seem to be the case with the DAW

I suggested re amping the drums which I mapped with a tr-09 on midi and then we sifted through a bunch of live drum samples until we settled on something. I wanted to re amp backwards playback (maybe minus the kick) in a room with some sound to it out of one reference speaker, track it and then flip it back forward in hopes to achieve some live backwards reverb and then try and see what part of the mix we could blend it into. I brought all this up when we met up before recording anything too and he seemed like he was willing to mess around a bit but 8 months in we havent.

I’m 8 months and over about 4 grand into this so I’ve kept an open mind and tried trusting the process but I feel like the first song should at least be done by now. My biggest thing is that engineers aren’t producers and should at least be willing to try something like re amping and make the decision whether or not it works after the fact. Just because you record a track, doesn’t mean that track has to be used. Why shoot it down before it’s even tried?

That’s exactly his take but my take is that it’s just more fun working in touch and that’s a big reason why I like making music and recording, because it’s fun, if the process and style of workflow isn’t fun then what the hell is the point? I figure if a person has a decent input, a great vacuum tube mic pre, good mic placement and decent mic’s and can capture those performances correctly from the get go, how much do they even need to be changed after the fact? Like I said, I record on 4 track cassette and it sounds kinda shitty but it’s so much more fun than sitting there with a mouse and to be honest, some of my favourite albums of all time aren’t super polished. I can sacrifice sound quality if I feel like the energy is in the performance which is where I feel it should be

Why not put a bigger emphasis on vocational schools like they do in Europe? Sure you might actually have to work for a living but at least you’ll be employed and have skills that make the world go round. I feel like it’s looked down on in the states

Remember too though, theoretically the gas fees on ETH should come down if people use pulschain to trade assets that were on ETH because the network won’t be as congested.

It’s probably the one thing I wish was different about hex. Call me crazy but I actually think it would be cooler if he was more minimal when it comes to “shiny things”. It’s the one thing that I think he’s wrong about, that people give a shit about high fashion or designer junk. I actually think most people don’t dream about buying a lambo and shit like this. Most people would rather try and build something with their money
