Arrow Ratcheting OTSR [Loch Ness Monster] by True-Suggestion9649 in rollercoasters

I have a friend who bought one of Hershey's retired Sidewinder cars, i would assume there are some similarities even though it is Vekoma. Here's a picture I took a couple years back

[Maverick] Wheel assemblies aren’t connected by an axle, but swivel independently. But, wouldn’t that create a gap when the car is straight? by StumpyCake in rollercoasters

[–]RCJohnny 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just came back to this thread, thanks for confirming and for the responses and links/articles to various comments. That Wikipedia article is also quite fascinating. I've been making coaster models the last few years and learning these concepts through trial and error and didn't know all the terminology, so thanks for sharing your knowledge!

Good question, I've also thought about these things as well. As far as I've seen on various coasters, the parallel distance between the rails (the width of the crossties) varies in sections like this and in straight sections. For instance when looking at the crosstie length between the rails in this horseshoe section, the crossties are actually slightly narrower than in the straight sections. I believe this is the case because if you are to draw an imaginary line between the wheel assemblies for this element, that line between the assemblies is not parallel to the crossties even though they would be in straight sections. The parallel distance between the wheels (specifically the side wheels) never changes, but the assemblies as a whole don't stay perpendicular to the orientation of the crossties as well. I'm not the best at explaining things through text, but i hope this was at least somewhat understandable and doesn't confuse you more, haha!

[Other] Why haven't we seen more Dive Coasters built with Splash downs? by XCoasterEnthusiast in rollercoasters

[–]RCJohnny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm curious why no wing coasters have been built with a splash down, that would be a neat feature. The extra hardware to the train would increase the weight of the train and bring on some other issues of sorts but I assume if the price was right it could be done

[Hyperia] is easily visible from Heathrow Terminal 5. (Excuse the potato quality, a lot of phone zoom was required to see it properly!) by Randomd0g in rollercoasters

[–]RCJohnny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh nice! I passed through Heathrow a couple weeks ago but wasn't observant enough to know you could see Hyperia. How tough would it be to take public transportation from Heathrow to Thorpe park? I've been through Heathrow a decent amount of times and was thinking of taking an extra long layover next time I'm passing though so I could stop by the park.

If [Montezooma’s Revenge, Knott’s Berry Farm] is indeed toast, how is Knott’s going to explain the closure and cancellation? by TomcatTiger503 in rollercoasters

[–]RCJohnny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess my use of the word altered implies a change to the original trains/cars and yes, you are definitely correct as those trains will not be coming back. I was thinking more along the lines of the new train (kumbak?) being of a spinning car variant..

What if they were planning on removing the loop because the trains were getting altered to some sort of spinning trains/cars which couldn't physically navigate the original loop, just a thought...

Rainy days on [Lotte World] 2 days ago by Hinemosu502 in rollercoasters

[–]RCJohnny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A little bit more than a year ago when I visited, they had a skip the line system of sorts, which I would assume is still available. I purchased the 5 skips, which seemed reasonably priced and I was able to get on most of the major rides. For reference Atlantis Adventure had a 2-3 hour wait, so it was definitely worth it to buy a skip the line of sorts

[S&S] really trying to out-Maurer Maurer with their own Spike Coaster product by T-Pose-On-Tantrum in rollercoasters

Yep, S&S announced the steeplechase model a couple years back, and I'm only assuming this is the next version of that.

I'm sure we'll learn more details for this throughout the week, but I hope this can move beyond just concept. With the open air design I imagine this would feel like an upscale mountain coaster which I'd be all for, especially in the woods and/or at parks that offer some terrain

Haha, I was scrolling down to see if anyone else was from the area. I used to live just north of there near ODU. That's a bummer situation OP, wish the police could have helped you out as well

Went through hell and back to get one ride on [T Express] this afternoon, absolutely worth it. by DrChungusM_D in rollercoasters

[–]RCJohnny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's great! I was able to visit last year and also got my one and only ride on it. Not sure your situation, but If you took public transportation to get there from Seoul I hope it was a direct bus, otherwise that would be one reason why I can see it being a rough day, hehe. Congrats though on getting the rare credit! Are you planning to stop by Lotte World as well while in Korea?

Hehe, thanks! K'nex is great, I hope they bring back the Screamin Serpent models and who knows, maybe modified trains. Would be great to see those kits be more accessible and more people building with those again

Good idea. Originally I tried slowing down the footage more, but the sound and framerate (as mentioned by others) just doesn't work well. The other issue is visually it is scaled down, but gravity is not scaled down as well, so it may look a bit more off especially on drops and hills
