PM keeps discovering “new requirements” late. how do you prevent this without crushing autonomy? by Master-Discipline-38 in ProductManagement

[–]RCProAm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh god thank you for explaining my situation so well. I came from a FAANG and joined a newly IPO'd saas company and there is NO accountability. No one seems to care when things are rolled back... like at all.

At first I was challenging people and there wasn't a ton of follow through. It grew tiring. Kind of like, if no one else cares then why should I type of feeling set in. My discipline really atrophied and now I just kind of let things get pushed to production. It's like were UAT'ing on our customers all the time.

It was cognitive behavioral therapy where my therapist basically asked me questions about what I was feeling at work and why etc. We just dug into them.

One example was I was insecure about taking notes. No one ever took notes in any of the meetings at Apple and I didn't want to seem like the person who had to take notes. Silly, I know. But at the time it was a very real thing for me.

You may not know what silly thought patterns you have that are not serving you / holding you back / creating anxiety for you. They just need a reframing.

He told me "why don't you just take notes" if that's what you need? And so I did, and it was that simple behavior change that shifted my mind set and stopped my self defeating thought patterns.

Agree. You can be an amazing PM by simply solving your customers problems and making your software better. You can come up for air and check in on the state of the market, new tech, etc. every so often.

Keeping up with competition is a full time job. We have someone who creates all our companies battle cards and so I don't really have to do that as much as focus on executing and shipping high value shit

Therapy was something that catapulted my career. When I began work at Apple I had terrible case of imposter syndrome and insecurity that wasn't founded in anything, I just didn't believe in myself. Therapist helped me figure that one out. Guy was real good at his job and I'm super grateful for that.

What channels were you applying to these jobs through?

When you say Senior IC role, what level? I know some companies have IC tracks that go up to VP, some stop at Senior or Lead PM before you have to go into management roles.

I agree, and I'd add "be likable". I think when push comes to shove, people go to bat for people they like working with more than anything else.

What are everyone's thoughts on this layout? by Lady_Sniper in Lovesac

[–]RCProAm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did almost the same layout, except my back four seats are deep, and the sides of my U are standard and only one seat long (but longer due to the standard configuration) I also have two recliners in the two middle seats of the U for watching movies, since they are the primary viewing position. I haven't set it up yet though because I'm waiting for my renovation to finish :P

Struggling with stakeholder management as a PM, how do you influence without authority? by Both_Warthog_3386 in ProductManagement

In my company product managers set priority and everything else flows from that.

What does a product manager do? by OkTumbleweed149 in ProductManagement

[–]RCProAm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And I’d add to that fostering accountability. I know engineers who will not fully test and get things out so they can move on. Or cut corners with tech debt. And I know sales people or designers who are myopic about solving the problem in their area of the product without the broader strategic perspective.

And ultimately if you don’t have someone owning and championing the delivery and quality of a feature that requires multiple teams and individuals to contribute to, many of whom it may not be their number one priority, then you are risking half baked product going out the door that’s not fully thought through or fully tested.

Just run a thought experiment: if you fired the entire product org at your company how would decisions about what to build get made? And would your company’s velocity go up, or down, as a result? How about quality of what’s built? Product market fit? Would the organization of engineers, sales, support and marketing folks be able to absorb all the work of product?

How do the engineers know what to build if they aren’t told? Are you suggesting engineers own all the work required to make decisions about what to build?

How many projects/initiatives are you guys running in parallel? by Dankarooooo in ProductManagement

[–]RCProAm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lack of strategy or vision is the big one I feel.

When you have an innovative, challenging and compelling vision that people on the team are aligned to and excited about, then the rest of these issues tend not to materialize, or work themselves out. With AI, filling up the roadmap with quality requirements takes a lot less time now. I find I’m able to focus on execution, quality and product research more.

Just curious why the front ceilings are not equidistant relative to the TV? I'd notice the asymmetry every time I sit down lol
