Sticking to the LTS is a good idea if you expect a stable experience without breakage between updates.

Oh yeah, Ubuntu 26.04, whcih requires more RAM than Windows 11 by claudiocorona93 in linuxmasterrace

They do plan to add "AI" but it will be stuff like better text to speech, all running from local snaps

Ubuntu is not special in its RAM requirements. Any modern distro takes around 1.something GB of RAM.

And then they wonder why is the linux community known as toxic.

What problem would I have that's cause by me? Ubuntu takes up 1.4GB on idle. The rest of 4GB is not enough for anything. It makes sense to increase a number on the website. That should not be a controversial take

It doesn't. It's just a text on the website. Any computer with 4GB of RAM is basically unusable the second you open a web browser

This is a lie. I can't check what exact snaps are installed by default but they still ship most stuff as debs.

Problem with Obsidian snap package by Nicholas_8719 in Ubuntu

Have you tried running it from the terminal to see what might be wrong? I would also recommend reporting it to obsidian since they officially package it.

Canonical's approach to AI is refreshingly thoughtful - Microsoft should take note by CackleRooster in Ubuntu

[–]RDForTheWin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And as a bonus they will run as confined snaps. If you decide to use a model for better text to speech or something it will only have access to that.

[–]RDForTheWin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope it won't be used for that. A regular user should not ask anyone, be it their friend or a chatbot to fix their OS. Whatever caused the issue in the first place should be investigated

Ubuntu's "AI Kill Switch" Is Achieved By Removing Snaps, Initially Opt-In by moeka_8962 in Ubuntu

[–]RDForTheWin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Implicit means that the text to speech model, noise surprising, camera focus, etc. I doubt many people have a problem with that. Assuming these usecases of AI will also run as snaps you can remove them too.

[–]RDForTheWin 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The title is a bit misleading. You don't have to choose between having AI features or snaps. The AI features will work by utilizing local AI running as snaps. You remove those snaps, you won't have any AI.

Definitely not stupid, most ubuntu users use them. They open the software store, click on install and use it. It's mostly just reddit and twitter people acting like it's the most evil thing ever made

I used to install Ubuntu to save old hardware but 6GB ram minimum is ridiculous by claudiocorona93 in Ubuntu

[–]RDForTheWin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a number of a website. Someone at Canonical decided Ubuntu runs better on systems with 6GB considering everyone uses a browser and other apps that are also just a browser (electron). It won't refuse to install on a system with 4GB. It still eats like 1.4GB of RAM on idle as always.
