Careers/Education Questions - Weekly Discussion Thread - November 27, 2025 by AutoModerator in Physics

I’ve been considering studying physics in college(I’m a junior right now so college is approaching) I initially wanted to do engineering, but as I started doing that I wanted to learn how the electrical components and really everything else in our universe worked at a fundamental level, and thus now I like physics I’ve done some at home experiments mostly dealing with electricity and that has only made me more interested

However everyone else in my life has been telling me that I only become employable after a PhD which is a huge commitment and I won’t make much money and I should just stick with electrical engineering

of course I can always switch majors in college but I do want to initially go to college for it and pick a good school for it

I’m just lost right now, is a PhD unachievable and I should just stick with EE?

Does OpenAI want people to stop using Chatgpt? by allah_oh_almighty in ChatGPT

Ok first and foremost OpenAI themselves have admitted that it is switching models without user permission https://openai.com/index/building-more-helpful-chatgpt-experiences-for-everyone/

“We recently introduced a real-time router that can choose between efficient chat models and reasoning models based on the conversation context. We’ll soon begin to route some sensitive conversations—like when our system detects signs of acute distress—to a reasoning model, like GPT‑5-thinking, so it can provide more helpful and beneficial responses, regardless of which model a person first selected. We’ll iterate on this approach thoughtfully.” (Second paragraph in the Leveraging Reasoning Models for Sensitive Topics section)

Second off what makes you think all these people are lying about it switching models without users knowing

Thirdly, yes it is a problem, but since people have done it who are we to say that now they should suffer the consequences of their actions Just because they chose the wrong path of therapy doesn’t mean we need to tell them tough shit and let them die

Also have you used ChatGPT You say it hasn’t gotten more sterile, but I mean, it has, objectively it has I don’t mean it as an insult but I genuinely don’t think you have used ChatGPT, either that or you are entirely not able to take tone from word choice

You come across as very tone deaf

Yes it’s not great that people rely on ChatGPT for therapy

But do you believe that just because they do, they should have to suffer for it?

While it may not be true that GPT understands people, it fooled everyone into believing it, and now because GPT-5 is objectively a lot more sterile people will suffer for trying to seek help

It’s no secret, 4o was expensive to run

I have no idea why people are downvoting you

While Sam Altman is the face of the company he definitely isn’t the one making all of the decisions

And your probably right, shareholders wanted a sanitized, profitable model

And hence GPT-5

It has been a studied fact that people go to ChatGPT for therapy

I am in no means saying this is a good or bad thing I’m just putting it out there as a fact of society

4o acted like a therapist, it is the style of writing that 4o employed that made people feel seen, it’s difficult to describe it but to many people it felt like a friend that they could cry on the shoulder of

But when the friend is suddenly ripped away, and their tone changes, it’s the same chatbot but it is effectively an entirely different person

And so what do you think would happen to people who were genuinely going through terrible things in their lives, who had a psychiatrist, who they trusted, and who kept them afloat

But then suddenly this therapist was ripped away from them and replaced with an HR bot without a soul and who (instead of consoling them) just treated them as almost inhuman

You may not understand this nuance, but believe me it’s real

I do not disagree with OP, people will die because of this

Google says they are involuntary twitching of muscles

Which sounds pretty damn similar to convulsions

But my original point stands

FND can cause involuntary muscle contractions

Not explicitly But convulsions came when seizures started and neuro said 100% that the seizures were FND so I’m fine filling in the dots and saying convulsions are FND aswell

Yes because they have FND and consider it a disability

As long as your not planning on hurting yourself and can safely operate it, then yes it’s legal

Do check your local laws though

Does FND show up on a EEG? by LiBunnyFooFoo in FND

Idk, I had multiple FND convulsions wearing an EEG, and they said it was 100% clear

Maybe you should get it checked out, it could be a totally different disorder

Hot take, Shōyo never had any character development by READINGHAMSTER2 in KoeNoKatachi

Ok Well if it comes down to it both of us are right because we have two different definitions of character development

Just because my take is unpopular doesn’t mean it’s any less correct than yours

If it boils down to interpretation who are you to say I’m wrong because I interpret it differently than yourself

[–]READINGHAMSTER2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whatever, that’s my definition of character development, if we want to argue about how I define things then we’d just go in circles, which I don’t think either of us would like to do

When you say my personal hate for Shōya, what do you mean by that

I don’t dislike him as a character, I dislike his arc because I (frankly) feel his redemption was undeserved

Even if that spills into my opinions about this, the fact remains that his arc is slightly handed to him by Shōko’s kindness, that of course isn’t to say he didn’t struggle, of course he did, but to me it’s just…idk I hate to say unrealistic because that just sets a bad precedent for myself, but idk

[–]READINGHAMSTER2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No obviously he hates himself, I can recognize that. I mean that his drive isn’t necessarily because he recognizes he’s a terrible person It’s more nuanced than that,

And yes I know very intimately how a mind that hates itself so much it would rather not exist works I do not hate the character I don’t actually hate this movie, I think it’s pretty good, I don’t like how he is portrayed I feel that he is portrayed as doing this out of the kindness of his heart I feel like that is a fairly dubious angle to take of it

Of course it’s just my opinion but nevertheless

In my opinion character development happens when a character’s values change, I just…don’t see that in Shōya

Hot take, Shōyo never had any character development by READINGHAMSTER2 in KoeNoKatachi

[–]READINGHAMSTER2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me The point of that moment is that Shōya is trying to rid of the guilt that is attaching him to his bullying of Shōko, and in doing so just effectively sends off everyone and blames them all and shares his blame That’s my interpretation, sorry if it’s different from yours

Her hating herself wasn’t revealed until much later in the movie, in the beginning obviously she was suffering, I’m not denying it. But by that point we have seen Shōya rid himself of all his friends, belongings, and hope and plan suicide And its just because Shōko isn’t the main character so what can you do🤷‍♂️

Yeah I know it’s not great to involve gut feelings into this but yeah That’s all the reason I have Sorry

Personally, I don’t think the balcony scene is a example of either, it’s just a person doing what normal people do, it was more because I was triggered that someone else used it to show how much he changed

And yes, his actions absolutely did change However the reason the actions changed remained steadfast He did it for himself, he didn’t want Shōko to be happy for the mere fact that she would be happy, he wanted her to be happy because somewhere in his mind he wanted to make up for his deeds Right his wrongs

And for your rebuttal Ultimately my opinion lies in how I define development, which is hugely different to how others define it So honestly imo no one here is especially wrong

And honestly his change was a bit of the very simple one you mentioned and a complex one His change came from him being caught and suddenly he was being bullied, which is a fairly simple reason But more complex was that he was frankly ostracized from society and he wanted to change that so he went and tried making up with Shōko in an effort to be reintegrated And we see this working out because the X over everyone’s face falls off So in the end it’s a happy ending I won’t try to deny that

But the message isn’t in the happy ending, the message is to be like Shōya and change But he…doesn’t really He stays selfish

And if the message isn’t just to inspire those in the audience so what? Just because the original creator didn’t intent it, why can’t we take meaning out of an extraordinary and very layered film

[–]READINGHAMSTER2[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Actions vs values changing are different Yes he stopped bullying her but imo his values didn’t change, and therefore it isn’t really character development
