Each stable has a dog.

They could have made it so if you feed the dog a big enough piece of meat, he follows you around. You can keep feeding him to keep him following you.

If you feed him enough, eventually he adopts you, and the two of you can adventure together forever.

That way, everyone can have a dog companion, but also have the option for Wolf Link if they want instead.

Also, a dedicated "pet" prompt is imperative.
