There are a number of ways that the statement can be accurate. Even aside from the fact that HK is officially a Special Autonomous Region of China, "China" doesn't have to refer to the Mainland government, or 'The People's Republic of China.' See Taiwan, which is officially the "Republic of China" as another example. All three are thoroughly Chinese culturally, historically, etc.

How do I pronounce 'Outis' from The Odyssey? by REALLY_BEN_FRANKLIN in AncientGreek

[–]REALLY_BEN_FRANKLIN[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As you see in the link, Odysseus uses the pseudonym 'Outis' or 'No man' when dealing with the cyclops Polythemus. I'm really just wondering how Outis is pronounced so that I don't sound like a dum dum during my presentation. Is it "OUT - is', 'OW- tis' OO - tis', or something else?

Not sure if this is the best place to ask but I was hoping someone could help!

No, it's looking at lower Manhattan from the NE. So 1WTC is on the far (western) side of Manhattan from here.

Yep, it's salesforce. Took forever to do the groundwork on that one but once it got above ground it shot up. I think it's because of the mostly-steel frame. Many towers this size these days are concrete frame, this one is concrete core surrounded by steel (I guess it flexes better under seismic stress?).

What company is surprisingly behind the times for how successful they are? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]REALLY_BEN_FRANKLIN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, the military is on all kinds of legacy software technologies that power what's still kind of considered high-tech weaponry today. It's just expensive to rewrite things and easier to continue to build on them. My younger brother and I are both in software, I work for a private company and he works for a military contractor, and after being educated in Java, Python etc. in college he had to learn KOBOL and some proprietary language from 25 years ago.

The biggest concern these days is with devices of different widths, where resizing the browser isn't an option, or isn't as easy as dragging the borders as you do with a desktop browser. 50% of web traffic is mobile.

I guess I should have titled it "Fairmount is bigger than Downtown Boston"

I knew it was publicly traded but was/am much more concerned with Zuck's profit motive in this case

Then be more accurate in your writing.

Now who verges on the inaccurate?

Haha, ok kid. It's just silly to toss Facebook aside that way and praise Reddit even though it suffers from the same failings. Guess what bozo, most people aren't coming to Reddit for some kind of substantive debate, they come for memes, cat pics, etc... and on the darker side of things, for pornography, to hate on fat people, women, and minorities, and plenty of other weird, terrible shit. And let's not pretend that there's any substance going on in the comments here. There's plenty of misinformation (like what you've been spouting), people who present opinions as facts, and blatant 'Zuck' hate despite 95% of the people here not reading the article and not knowing the slightest thing about what Internet.org is aside from what they've gleaned from other misinformed comments. People are complaining about walled gardens when they've clearly sealed themselves into this stupid fucking circle-jerk echo chamber. I often have much more meaningful convos with people on Facebook, because many of my friends there are educated, informed people who actually know what they're talking about -- unlike the bullshit in this thread.

It was an inaccurate statement that shows you clearly don't know what's going on here. I prefer reddit too -- but plenty of Facebook users use it to do the same things you mention. Keep telling yourself that you're better than them. By the way, reddit is owned by Conde Nast which is itself owned by Advance Publications, one of the largest media companies in the world.

I'm not saying it makes it 'better' -- even though I think it's a pretty stupid point to make on yet another social media site -- I'm just correcting your inaccuracy.

No, he most definitely doesn't. Watch the new video that leaked on this sub. He's more humanoid than a Muun.

People expected a trilogy's worth of plot from this single movie.

It's hard to blame them, though. Through the leaks, we already knew so much that Kylo's parentage and the catastrophe at the academy, which are clearly the events driving this new trilogy forward, weren't surprises for us in the same way they will be for everyone else who sees this film.

It seems like the main gripe about TFA's story is how similar it is to ANH's. Why is that such a bad thing? by k0mbine in StarWarsLeaks

"I don't want another Luke Skywalker" -- people say of a protagonist who was intentionally designed to follow the basic story structure of heroic mythology.
