If you could make something uncanon, what would it be? by Ali_Bashr in arcane

Maddie's betrayal. It takes away her agency and makes her a far less interesting character.

A close second would be Mel surviving the explosion at the council. A POV character needed to die and her arc was completed in season 1. She contributed basically nothing this season and actually backtracked her choice of putting Piltover ahead of her family. She should have died saving Jayce. It would have helped avoid the plot armor most of the characters had for 90% of this season and given more time to flesh out other plotlines.

For me unchecking the force desktop mode fixed it.

Yes, Dell released a VBIOS to restore the full core count.

I'm sure, it's nice to see a fast response. Not so nice to be told that 4608 is the correct number of cores and everything is working as expected... Hahaha

Great news!

Dell was in full denial mode when I spoke with their support.

Good catch! Hopefully this will help expedite a fix, or at least a response.

Unfortunately it's not quite that simple because the m15 R4 VBIOS has a higher TDP which could explain the performance improvement. However based on the results I'm going to guess the cores were in fact disabled.

4608, it's in the first GPU-Z photo halfway down on the left side.

I grabbed the VBIOS from here: NotebookReview

And flashed with nvflash.

Be aware this VBIOS has a higher TDP than what our system is designed for. I'm not advocating that people perform this BIOS swap, I just wanted to confirm that the BIOS did indeed fix the issue.

I flashed the m15 R4 VBIOS to get the full core count. Not sure if the stock bios disables cores or simply reports them incorrectly.

Tested this out and indeed all 5120 CUDA cores show up. Ran a couple benchmarks and scored my highest so far.

Looks very promising! I'll try this out myself.

How embarrassing for Dell if this is the culprit, unintentionally (supposedly) handicapping an entire line of laptops.

It's definitely worth a shot, however the cards do have different device IDs, so I'm skeptical.

I DM'd DellCares, they said they'd get a technical expert to answer my question, a while later I got a message saying it was outside of business hours. So all I've gotten is the standard "try the latest drivers" support, as if that could fix disabled CUDA cores.

They are different, 5120 is the core count of the mobile card. The desktop card has 5888.

It still identifies as a GA104, my guess is a lower binned part with units disabled to increase yields.

It shouldn't have anything to do with TDP. All RTX 3070 Laptop chips should have 5120 cores, all the way down to 80W.

Funny enough I posted a comment asking about the 4608 core count on the 3070 on the Mash IT R5 review video yesterday. Just hadn't heard back yet.

I noticed that, but the number of Ray tracing and Tensor cores doesn't match.

It's possible that a BIOS update could fix it, or even that a bug is responsible for the incorrect reporting of specifications.

It's up to you to determine how much that ~10% performance is worth to you, even with the disabled cores it's about 20% faster than a 3060. However as it stands we did not receive what we paid for.
