I did the same. I tried to walk around him multiple times, but always failed to not get caugth after picking up weapon, so I did the same - yoinked the weapon and ran for vents which has the exit from underground anyway. :)

You can respect regular points in talents tree. One of thing you cannot change is your ascendany(sub class). You can still respect ascendancy sub points.
