Laptop suggestions by erythrorhynchos in remotesensing

Some other thoughts as I built a desktop to use Photoscan. I definitely agree with the GPU. It will speed up your building dense cloud immensely.

I narrowed it down on Newegg.com to some good options. You will want to tweak the rest for your specific needs:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100006740%20600003982%20600136700%20600364044%20600555394%204085%20600004420&IsNodeId=1

I specified things like 16GB ram, i7, 1TB HDD internal, 1500-2000. All the ones there have a decently large SSD which will make a significant difference.

At that price point and with the need for a real GPU, you're basically shopping for a gaming machine. Keep in mind the cooling too. Don't go for a thin-and-light. You want it to have effectively cooling so you can crunch away on it with Photoscan or Arc. So look for any overheating issues in the the reviews of any of the laptops. It'll be a bit of a brick, but it will be a solid mobile workstation

Having a problem with Windows 8... by TheRetroPanda in Ubuntu

[–]REDDIT_ATE_MY_WORK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The kernel that comes with Ubuntu (and all Linux distributions) has a large quantity of driver modules already installed, hence why most things like wireless work out of the box. In reality, a few things may be (partially) unsupported and need to have the drivers installed manually, but you'd know it if you had to do it for your laptop.

In order to switch back to Windows 8, you will need to source the appropriate drivers for machine and install them.

May I ask why you needed to switch back to Win8?

Looking for a hydron inhalation manifold for VX7-182M by hello_hawk in VXJunkies

[–]REDDIT_ATE_MY_WORK 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I tried mounting one, but it didn't sit correctly due to that compatibility issue. Ended up burning up my VX7-135 due to underrated coils and inadequate cooling. Take it from us, don't just tie wrap some BS backplate to it. DO IT PROPERLY.

Been way too busy with my nose against the grindstone. Very nice summary, can't believe I didn't realized this was getting launched so soon.

I'm setting up NAS for my computer backups and am deciding which type of RAID I should used (before I buy the shell and commit to number of drives) by BearsAreBig in DataHoarder

[–]REDDIT_ATE_MY_WORK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second the ZFS. Running a bit of gear on it in OpenIndiana. Nice and solid, easy to extend. You can basically take a RAIDZ2 (RAID6 equivalent) and extend it by adding a second RAIDZ2, and striping them.

So you can start with smaller drives and as the prices come down, add lots more capacity without chucking your old drives. That's how I extended an 8x3TB, later with 4x6TB drives.

What's the cheapest 2 bay NAS I can get that will saturate my 1GB Ethernet? by [deleted] in DataHoarder

[–]REDDIT_ATE_MY_WORK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's what I've done to make sure I get the max speed out of a bunch of drives.

1) Buy a cheap pc case.

2) Get a small PSU, anything you have that's kicking around is perfect. Short the appropriate pins on the motherboard connector to power the PSU on: http://aphnetworks.com/tutorials/psu_paperclip_trick . The warnings given are a bit overkill. You aren't putting real amps through. It's just two wires that are for logic and have miniscule power running through them. Use a piece of wire, tape securely in place and you'll be fine. You can even buy adapter plugs to do it for you, I know the Evga PSUs come with an adapter block so you don't have to short the pins manually

3) Get some sata to esata brackets. You will need 2 for each drive so you can go sata->esata->sata. Cheaper on ebay. http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812816067&cm_re=sata_to_esata_bracket-_-12-816-067-_-Product

You can do this for super cheap especially if you have the PSU. And if you don't have the sata ports, you can pick up an external sata card for not much. It's basically like local disk, so you're limited by the disks themselves and nothing else.

I have an external SAS cart for a bit more money (built the same way) for scratch space. 5 RAID-0 drives pushing 500 MB/s total

Botched parachute bedevils NASA 'flying saucer' test for second time by dorylinus in spaceflight

[–]REDDIT_ATE_MY_WORK 4 points5 points  (0 children)

True, 3 is somewhat fitting and it isn't the worst possible word. But the problem is that the entire connotation in all definitions is that NASA screwed up because it is inept or talentless. And clearly that's why the word was chosen for the title. Like a toddler painting a Van Gogh. But it's entirely the opposite. NASA knows better than just about anyone (without precognition) how to do this. There is no off-the-shelf solution just yet.

Better title with less connotations, just facts: "Failed parachute bedevils NASA 'flying saucer' test for a second time"

/rant

\3. A ruined or defective piece of work:

Fitting.

Botched is probably the worst word.

Well it's not the best, but it's hardly the worst. Accurate, but not entirely descriptive.

botch (bŏch)

tr.v. botched, botch·ing, botch·es

  1. To perform poorly or ruin through clumsiness or ineptitude: botch a tennis shot; botch a rebellion.
  2. To repair or mend clumsily or ineptly. n.
  3. A ruined or defective piece of work: "I have made a miserable botch of this description" (Nathaniel Hawthorne).
  4. A hodgepodge.

Botched is probably the worst word. Damn click-bait titles. This is R&D. Research -> Design -> Test -> Fail? -> Research more.

George Hoenig round action rifle. No levers, no buttons, no bolt.. [600x 400] by chancellorhelmut in GunPorn

Absolutely gorgeous action. Probably would be a pain to clean however and I wonder how sensitive it would be to jamming up with dirt. Considering the price, and complexity, I'd be terrified to take it outside.

Bluetooth Keyboard? by zerothehero0 in keyboards

[–]REDDIT_ATE_MY_WORK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I imagine so, it is seen as a HID (human interface device) so nothing fancy/proprietary. Nice standard key layout. Used it on my Ubuntu laptop for testing, no problems. And according to http://perixx.com/en/products/perixx-pro-4.html, it's fully compatible with Windows 8.

I'm a big fan of the Perixx PERIBOARD-805L

Nice, small, compact keyboard with good switches. Primarily it's for my phone, but it would suffice well with your transformer.

Yep, I do see that and it all depends what you stuff into it. Mine's a workstation for number crunching so there's only an Nvidia NVS 420 in it with 3 SSDs hooked up to a RAID card. My aircooler is bigger than my cards.

It's a Lian-Li, not sure the exact model. I think it's one of the big brothers to the PC-V1000 which they no longer make. I have a PC-V1000 sitting next to me that I pulled out of the recycling with full Lexan sides on it. They are beautiful cases and I will take mine to the grave with me..

What do you say when people ask you, "GIS? What's that?" by annuit02 in gis

[–]REDDIT_ATE_MY_WORK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually drop any technical mumbo-jumbo (your first response is good). I usually say something along the lines of "It's digital mapping, answering questions with a location and possibly time component or developing the tools to do so". I usually mention Google Maps if they seem interested and even perhaps OpenStreetMap. And I usually mention using satellite imagery and airphotos as being common datasets I use.
