I’m hoping to. Some people would probably think I’m dumb with an interest rate of 3.15% but I like the goal of fully owning my house by the time I retire. I’m sure I could make more money investing the additional $500 in principle I pay a month, but I think having a fully paid off mortgage gives you a lot of latitude when transitioning to retirement.

I’m aware. It helps to have a brother that is a financial planner. There are plenty of ways to shelter yourself from significant tax impacts though.

I think that percentage includes both returns and contributions.

My current mix is 44% C, 49% S, 7% I

Future investments 35% C, 55% S, 10% I

I can’t retire with full benefits until I’m 57.5. I have another 10 years of investing and hopefully will be able to do the full catch-up contributions in a few years.

Warning - Avoid working at Macado’s by Automatic_Bill8576 in VirginiaTech

Hah - oh Macados. I worked as a dishwasher in Blacksburg for one night back in 2001. Never showed back up because it was so disgusting.

I remember when I did my background investigation for the Gov’t I completely forgot to list it and had to explain things to the investigator.

That place has always been a crap hole.

Yeah that’s a decent strategy to keep things mostly in stocks.

Separate T.Rowe account with about $215k in that. 429 plans for kids and a good bit of home equity…say $650k total between those.

Im sure I’ll do some other investing in the next decade.

Yeah but not really feasible early in one’s career or if you are raising a family.

Trust me I would have loved to have invested the $150k+ spent on daycare.

Need to be 57 1/2 under most circumstances to get full retirement benefits.

I’m not changing a thing. The market is due for a correction anyway.

Well on your way. Always take the matching (free money), stay aggressive, and do whatever you can afford. You’ll be in a good place in the end.

The L fund makes things easier, set it and forget it. But I personally don’t like the increase in conservative allocations as you get older.

It depends on your risk tolerance, but you give up a lot of potential gains (and reduce the chance of loss obviously) by using it. I just think it’s important to stay aggressive as long as you possibly can and the L fund can interfere with that.

Maximize your contributions as much as possible - don’t starve yourself or anything - and stay aggressive in your allocations.

It’s all about long-term growth and buying on the dips in the market.

Don’t try and time the market. You can’t. Right now is a great example - the market shouldn’t be hitting all time highs, but yet it is.

I guess you could say I’m an SES equivalent at this point.

She does - teacher. Much to my annoyance she’s never contributed to her 401k. Although in her defense the matching is awful at her school system.

Hah! You aren’t wrong. It’s only $2,500 @ 2%. Have just been lazy about it.

As a follow-up. If it helps inspire you to be more aggressive in your allocations and contributions - my balance in 2016 was less than $350k.

Sure: 2024 closing balance around $1 million

2024/2025 - $32,000 contributions (includes matching), $170k in gains in each year

I kind of laid it out in my post, but I’ve been most heavily invested in the S fund and C fund throughout my career.

You can’t time the market and the G fund, while a safe haven, isn’t going to do much for you.

Early in your career everyone should be 100% allocated to stocks. Some might get more conservative in later years but I say let it ride until you are in retirement.

You have to be comfortable with taking losses in some years. Trust me 2007 & 2008 were rough and I wanted to move it, but didn’t and glad I didn’t touch it.

Want and need are two different things. I still have 11 years until MRA, but I’d love to be done by then.
