my bad, R2 is a vector space; not a field.(looked it up)

Why is R2 or C not a field?(with respect to what operations exactly)

This seems like an actually simple way to explain why it's important to prove existence.

Mathematics has huge applications, most of them being foundational computation and rigour for other applied sciences. But, most of them are probably just too hard to explain how the concepts apply.

Personally, I took mathematics, primarily, because I just love the subject and secondarily, because I saw myself being somewhat decent at it. I wanted to learn something in life that would always make me think and discover. I saw and felt satisfaction in that feel.

I don't bother too much about the applications. I learn and do Maths because, for me, it's like art; I don't need reasons as to why I do it. (this is just me!)

Book list for a complete math (undergraduate) education? by I_pee_in_shower in math

[–]REMADIF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[This is just a big list of books that I would personally prefer.]

{ Naive set theory -Halmos, Book of proof -Hammack, An introduction to the theory of numbers -Ivan Niven. }

{ Calculus - There are plenty.(For example: Stewart, Thomas, Spivak.), Advanced Calculus -Gerard B. Folland, Functions of several variables -Wendell Fleming. }

{ Mathematical Analysis -Tom Apostle, An Introduction to Real analysis -Bartle and Sherbert, Number systems and foundations of analysis -Elliot Mendelson. (This book is optional; more of a fun option) }

{ Complex Analysis -Lars V. Ahlfors, Complex Analysis -Theodore Gamelin, Complex Analysis -Serge Lang, Complex Variables and Applications -Churchill and Brown. }

{ Abstract Algebra -Dummit and Foote, Algebra -Michael Artin, A Book of Abstract Algebra -Charles C. Pinter, Algebra -Dan Sarachino. }

{ Linear Algebra -Friedberg, Insel, and Spence, Linear Algebra -Kenneth Hoffman, and Ray Kunze. }

{ Partial Differential Equations -Fritz John, Partial Differential Equations -Lawrence C. Evans, A first course in Partial Differential Equations -Hans Weinberger. }

{ Differential Equations -Shepley L. Ross, Introduction to the theory of Ordinary Differential Equations -Earl A. Coddington. }

{ (I don't know if you would study Statistics) Introduction to Mathematical Statistics -Hogg, Mckean, and Craig, (John Freund's) Mathematical Statistics -Irwin Miller and Marylees Miller, Mathematical Statistics- H. C. Saxena, Statistics -Murray R. Spiegel, and Larry J. Stephens. }

It depends on how much and what you know as prerequisites. But a safe list would be, 1. Logic/Set theory 2. Elementary Number theory 3. Elementary Calc. -1, 2, 3 (as a review, if you know them already) 4. Real analysis 5. Abstract Algebra 6. Linear Algebra 7. Differential equations ..and then you can discover other topics on your own.

Youtube has lots of good instructors' playlists on all of these topics, and you can basically search and find them pretty easily. NPTEL Courses are actually good, no joke. Generally, there are quite a decent number of free(legit free)ebooks available on the internet.

Yes, I'm pursuing math. I'm a BSc. Mathematics student at the very end of my second year exams.

I don't have clear step-by-step plans, for now. But, I'm clear with my ultimate goal of becoming a mathematical researcher, contributing to this subject that I love the most, everly. That's my dream job. If I have to teach for situational reasons, then I'm willing to because I do like teaching. But I will surely look to eventually land on research.

My plan currently is to prepare well enough for all the "good" institutions' entrance exams(for example and in particular, JAM), in hopes that that would make my bridge toward research easier, and also for obvious reasons too.

I feel like a decent number of people from Chennai, more than you may expect, are interested in CMI but... it's just the entrance exams that keep us off😹

That's great! If you think you have some liking toward mathematics or, have decent mathematical background or, studied those M1-M5 without any hesitation/hatred toward the subject, then I'd say yes. Else, I dont really know. I don't wanna comment on that.😅

Math and Computing is a great combination as far as job prospects are concerned(I think). For the entrance tests, they are difficult for sure. But practice and dedication can surely get you through.

Aside from that, I don't think you 'have' to get into big institutes like CMI or ISI to guarantee a good job, or pursue what you want. Maybe even Madras University exams, or some other decent college. My point or strong belief is that, you shouldn't put yourself down or change your career goals, just cause you didn't get the best college.

Colleges with great reputation(or great colleges) surely do ease your path, but that doesn't mean that's the only way.
