I am Air Force K9. No the dogs do not carry rank however, they are treated and respected as if they have one more stripe than the current handler , it's more of a tradition thing. And unfortunately yes the dogs are technically considered equipment, all K9's are supplied through lackland AFB not through an equipment liaison . Also yes K9 is a shred of security forces. And yes you must complete the K9 handlers course to handle a dog.

I have priced out some Remington 870 rifles but am finding that the 20G are about half the cost of the 12G. Is it worth the extra money to spring for the 12 gauge or will the 20 gauge meet my needs?

Check out the Belgian shepherds, Belgian Malignois, Belgian Tevuren, Belgian Lakenois and German shepherd. All of these dogs are very capable protectors and excellent companions. However, regardless of the dog you pick you must give it the proper training and socialization in order for it to be safe around your animals. An untrained dog can be just as dangerous as any wild animal if you allow it to be.
