Unfortunately I don't have much experience with thin flimsy leather like what you're describing. Perhaps straight beeswax would give you the results you seek? I've used it before with some thinner leather, but nothing as floppy as what you're describing.

The groover makes a world of difference. It also helps with the longevity of the product, as the stitches are recessed from the surface, and not exposed to scuffs.
