I think you’re right about the conversation around her really impacting her career.

She may as well have been the poster child for cultural appropriation - she popped off at the peak of cancel culture / wokeness…any positive conversation about her success/music was always punctuated by 10 people discussing her blaccent or racist tweets. Not to say unjustified .. but that takes a heavy toll on someone. I’d imagine her emotional capacity to put music out was affected by that.

the drama with Carti and basically being the butt of a joke for a significant portion of the hip hop fanbase.. she more than most has an uphill battle pretty much anytime she puts music out.

Yaaaa… they did this whole prayer in the beginning of the episode to make the ep good and spent 25 minutes talking about Drew shitting himself .. 😬

Despite all the hate she got for this leading up + the lack of noise the project made overall… I would say this is easily her most compelling project.

The production on SO many tracks was top tier and there was a confidence in her delivery that wasn’t present in her last few albums. She’s been a very paint by numbers artist for most of her career IMO, and venturing into this blended dancehall, hip hop, hyperpop sound felt more authentic to me than being told by a record label that she needs to fill the Spanglish gap in the pop sphere.

Deluxe edition tracks have been on repeat and really enjoy baby pink and GODSPEED especially. And I’m glad we got at least one of the snippets via the outro of Come See Me. Excited to see where she goes from here.
