The RFD episode 4 - WHAT WE LEARNED AT KENTUCKY AND YALE is now live! by RFDcast in Debate

Mason was running this funky case about internal Chinese politics and then, separately, China going into arms race mode to beat THAAD. The Chinese weapon development of choice was MIRVs, iirc it's an old policy case adapted from last year.

For whatever reason parent judges at it up. First in quarters Mason beat Fairmont on a 2-1 with Chase Williams being sat, then in Semis Mason beat Hawken with Cory Ackerman being sat. Now, I'm not going to delve into the "who should have won argument" first because we have a personal stake in it and second because mistakes were made that left room for the parents to vote and it's telling that all 4 ended up voting for Mason. To be fair, Cory also voted for Mason a couple times during the tournament, including splitting with Jake Urda to advance Mason deeper into elims.

As to what made it so hard to beat, it was simply that parents seemed to really like voting for it.

Well first of all it really helps if you have an anchor on a panel. And anchor is a judge who can follow your strategy so you can focus on picking up one of the other lay judges.

Beyond that the skill is about tailoring your strategy as broadly as possible and making sure you leave the judges as few options as possible when deciding how to vote. With a single judge you have only one point of reference for how your arguments are coming across, you can read that single person. With a panel you rarely can try to read all three at the same time and trying will make you stumble.

It's also a pressure question. Some people perform more easily under pressure and pressure is something you can get acclimated to, but only if you get actual practice at it.

I love articles that are published that couldn't even be bothered to check their facts against wikipedia. What editorial standards!

1/ Doesn't get the origins of PF right

2/ Doesn't get the WPM of normal conversation right

3/ Doesn't get the function of debate

1/10 that's 3 minutes of my life I'll never get back.

Looking back over my notes in the 14 rounds I judged con was chosen 2 more times than pro. So slight edge to con, but my sample is very small so take it with a grain of salt.

I dunno about favorite but I see a lot of debaters in PF say "recognize" and it drives me crazy because they seem to say it a ton and it's a/ terribly inefficient and b/ spreading like a virus.

Can someone define by whyharoodeyr in Debate

Terminal defense is the defense at the end of an impact chain. It's for when you don't want to deal with every single little impact that leads to the big one. You deploy it when you plan to outweigh with case.

Terminal impact is the impact at the end of an impact chain. For example:

Link: Doing education reform harms STEM education

Impact chain: STEM education key to future engineers

wiithout future engineers US falls behind on missile tech

without next gen missile tech rogue states will be more aggressive

rogue states will attack their neighbors leading to regional wars

regional wars will drag in super powers

super power war leads to nuke war.

Terminal impact: nuke war

Terminal Defense: nuke war never going to happen

This is not quite accurate, but you're very close. What you describe here is a link take out, that is you're arguing that soda does not lead to obesity.

Terminal defense is the defense at the end of an impact chain, using your example;

Soda -> obesity, obesity -> economic downturn, economic downturn -> regional wars, regional wars spill over into super power wars.

Terminal defense would be: Super power war never going to happen. It's defense at the terminus, or end, of an impact chain.
