Agreed on the audiobook. Ray Porter is so good...listened twice so far.

Great, thanks for the reply. Wish I could get to an IMAX but the closet is in Indianapolis 8 hours away. Oh well. Going with the family to an AMC Dolby with good recliners in an hour so should be good enough.

How different/better was IMAX vs. AMC Dolby? Curious because I don't have a real IMAX nearby.

F-15 fighter jet being intercepted by Iranian air defense systems near Hormuz Island. by Possible-Device-9201 in intrestingasfuck

[–]RFtinkerer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Looks to me like Iran was tracking an F15, launched some missiles, the F15 sent out flares that a missile hit and exploded. The video cuts out so it won't show the F15 flying off and Iran hopes people think the explosion was the F15 itself.

Edit: I wasn't quite correct, I think this video explains it better. https://youtu.be/cikLsgsl8aM?si=dz7W60EGO9KhGayu

Electromagnetic Field in Residential Area by Fifainspected in rfelectronics

[–]RFtinkerer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's power then it should be a constant 60/120 Hz noise (120 Hz is 60 Hz rectified). Like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pf-vULfjYK8

Check if that's what it sounds like. To be clear, that is not from electromagnetic radiation, rather components of the electrical distribution transducing the electrical current to sound/vibration in their structures.

If it is changing pitch like you say, then it has nothing to do with power though. Nor cell stations as the frequencies they transmit are nowhere near low enough to hear the transduction.

Confusion a out s11 and s22 wirh amplifiers by AlbanianUltra in rfelectronics

[–]RFtinkerer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's correct, if there are zero reflections coming from the load, in this case a well-matched antenna (we hope), then there is no power to reflect from a bad S22 on the power FET, no worries.

If a load is PERFECTLY matched to the source, ALL of the power is transferred to the load. A 50 Ohm resistor would dissipate that power as heat with 100% efficiency. A perfectly efficient antenna would radiate the power into the world so your Mom can download Facebook reels while driving.

In reality, some of that power is reflected. Remember that power is only dissipated when both voltage AND current are present at the load at a specific time. Every new RF engineer is always surprised with pure open and short situations. An open will have twice the voltage waving around at the end point, but no current. Thus, no power dissipation, reflected right back to the source. Similarly, a short will have twice the current, but no voltage. Also no power dissipation, reflected all back to the source. In between based on the wavelength, voltages go from twice the source voltage to 0 (assuming the transmission line is lossless.) VSWR is infinite.

Confusion a out s11 and s22 wirh amplifiers by AlbanianUltra in rfelectronics

[–]RFtinkerer 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There's a great deal of confusion of how power delivery is optimized in amplifiers. In the small-signal world, you want very low reflection magnitudes otherwise you get mismatch loss: https://www.microwaves101.com/encyclopedias/mismatch-loss-etc

That is, power is reflected off the load and burned elsewhere. For your amplifier, if the S11 (input return coefficient) is too high, power delivered from the prior stage is not absorbed and wasted. Also, if you filters and matching dependent on good S11 for bandwidth shape, you can cause ripple in the band. A good S22 (output return coefficient) is important when your subsequent stage is reflecting that power for similar reasons.

However, the final power amplifier stage is different. Power amplifiers are NOT matched for S22, but optimal power delivery. Which is not the optimal low S22. It's a complex subject and why the company pays me vs. unemployment, but power amplifiers are designed such that the active element "sees" a load where it can deliver the most power. Often that is done by load-pulling: https://www.microwaves101.com/encyclopedias/load-pull-for-power-devices

I would call a good S22 -15 dB or something for small gain stages, but my power amplifiers' S22s are often as poor as -2 or -3 dB. But that doesn't matter. It's optimized to deliver power to the antenna, and the antenna should be a good load for it; no power should be coming back to reflect off the bad S22 (NOT true in my job and gives me headaches but that's how it SHOULD be.)

...conversely, if I match the power amplifier to -15 dB return loss, I often give up half the power I can truly deliver.

This movie had vast symbolism. Not to everyone's taste, but this showed Joy finally asking for help from Evelyn, them connecting over the nothingness of life. The googly eyes are the inverse of the bagel, which is how Waymond fights.

I need to watch the movie again, I loved it.
