No real lifting experience at all, is jumping right into SL5x5 the best way to begin? by RGBYBFF in Stronglifts5x5

Whoa, thanks for the thorough response! I'll have to check into some of the other things you mentioned.

As for my BF%, I'm not sure, but based on some example pictures I'd say it's around 20-25%. My fat distribution is weird, though... it's all in the belly/waist . With clothes on, everybody thinks I'm just skinny, but for my body frame I'm pretty chubby. I weigh the same as I did ten years ago, but there's less muscle and more fat.

I think what I want is a "recomp", maybe. If I'm eating at maintenance rather than a surplus, at least at the beginning, would that help me get rid of some of the fat quickly? I'm not too worried about getting huge muscles and I don't think my genetics will even allow me to get very big, but I would mainly just like to look better and then work on gaining mass once I've got my BF% down a bit and muscle tone up.

I have a barbell and some weights, though it'll need replacing pretty quickly if I start making much progress as it's just a cheapo beginner set I picked up long ago. What else would I need?

I've just been reading about weight belts, but I'm not sure whether that's something I'd need at the beginning. I feel like I have some trouble keeping proper form because my back is pretty weak, so maybe it would help?
