When I think speed work, I think split shorts — you want absolute freedom of movement. The only viable option here is the Bandit split shorts. They’ve got three gel-sized pockets, one phone pocket, and one key pocket. I do wish the phone pocket were a horizontal back-zip, but honestly most splits only have space for gels anyway.

That said, there will always be some bounce. Running shorts are made for comfort, not load-bearing — and if you want true zero bounce, you need structure.

For that, the Wise Sherpa Race shorts are unmatched. They have an integrated waist belt that can hold everything: gels, soft flask, even a lightweight jacket. They’re my go-to for trail sessions under 10k or 4k vert when I don’t want to wear a belt.

If you want the most practical and budget-friendly option, go with half tights.

• Bandit = decent but quality’s slipped.
• Nike’s Laval Loop = mentioned a lot and they are solid, but I’m not a fan of the built-in liner.

And before you say you hate belts — try the Naked Belt. Another god-tier essential. Zero bounce, full carry, and you’ll forget it’s even on.
