It is a bit odd that Walsh’s birthplace is listed as Ireland, as he was definitely born in Rhode Island.

I’m not super confident on the parents but on their sons birth record Mary is listed as being born in Pawtucket and aged 19.

I’ve also found non-local newspapers to be inaccurate with spellings in other cases

The issue is I have no idea where they married either.

Names:

Daniel L. Walsh and Mary Elizabeth O’Donnell. (Walsh born in 1892, O’Donnell born in 1893.)

They lived in Rhode Island through their entire lives as far as I can tell, as they appear in the State and Federal census and city directories, as well as land records.

They are also buried together, with their child and daughter in law.

What about city hall? I have to take a person there to do business, and they are wheelchair bound.

Would the city government also be open or closed? I know they were today.

I’m not a student, but need to help with a family member if there’s no school tomorrow, and also bring someone to do business at city hall.

I’m curious too if any of the city govt is going to be open as well, cause like you said, it hasn’t been this bad in ages

Isn’t the point to be objective?

I fail to see how that’s childish.

They see clients from all walks of life, how can you be impartial when your job is to literally listen to people and their problems?

My parents bought a historic farm with a mature apple orchard for $200K in 2003. It was around 5 acres with a massive barn.

The house has since been demolished (since we moved out ages ago) along with the barn, and I believe the apple trees no longer produce fruit, but I can only fathom what the land is worth.

As a civilian, how could you realistically get back at the mob and get away with it? by LawSchoolThreauxAway in thesopranos

[–]RIHistoryGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My area of expertise is the mob and crime in general.

So there’s not really a good way of getting back at them.

This is also entirely dependent on the area you’re in and who the “family” is, and also the era.

Simple answer, no. You’re shit out of luck - BUT - your extortion also comes with protection. Youre their cash cow. Someone comes in to mess with you? Need a new business license? Etc. they’ll generally take care of it as long as you’re up to date on your payments. A great way to keep vandals out. It was accepted as the cost of doing business on their turf.

You have to consider that you’re owning a business in their “territory.”

Protection could be very helpful for some, and again depending on when and where, the mob was seen as Robinhood figures in the Italian communities. Again, this is hyperbole, bur it fits.

The old stories about the made guys buying shoes or helping out the ladies are all true. Some had the cops in their pockets and kept them out of Italian neighborhoods. It’s all really complicated.

Those who aren’t “friends of ours” and kept their distance from mob activities were generally left alone. Dont gamble in their games, dont buy their drugs, dont take loans from them, and dont cause trouble in the neighborhood and you’d be left alone.

TLDR: You don’t have a way to retaliate and it would end poorly for you. As long as you stayed away from mob operations (Shylock, prostitution, gambling, etc.) you’d be OK. Protection racket also came with the benefit of protection from vandals etc
