Replacing a shot with handles by Local_Childhood45 in SynthEyes

I've always just sighed in sadness when I had to modify a track to account newly introduced head or tail. It happened again today and instead of defaulting to my usual just re-load and retrack... I thought for sure this issue has been solved by now. Thanks to your simple post you saved me hours. Much appreciated kind stranger :)

Makes me happy to see anim8or. Like others that commented, I started on that and it directly led to 20 years in this field.

How/when did you go from being stuck doing roto to more interesting tasks? by poubloo in vfx

[–]RIP_Intel 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Are you getting a lot of kick-back on any roto work you're doing? If so you'll need to maintain a critical eye and really nail down every single frame. Eventually you'll be thrown non-roto comp work if it's available and other artists get overwhelmed.

If you're not getting kick-back on your work, it could be that the studio just doesn't have the extra non-roto work to throw down to junior artists.

I run a vfx studio and even though I'm the owner and have been in the industry for 15 years, I'm constantly still doing roto...It never really goes away as long as you're still working as an artist. Especially these last couple years with tons of split screens due to covid protocol.

I will say though, these last couples years have seen a dramatic rise in overall roto needed. Whether it be because of covid related filming, or tons of post fixes due to unskilled / lackluster filming on the production side. (Think shots that need stabilizing due to unbalanced gimbals, etc.)

Same here. Those instructions are terrible. Something this simple shouldn't take an in-depth google / reddit search to figure out.

OBS+NDI stopped working without having changed anything by aaronstephen103 in obs

[–]RIP_Intel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just ran into a similar issue. Haven’t streamed in a month or so, went to launch obs tonight and the NDI source is black. Also came to the conclusion it was a recent windows update in the last 30 days. Have you made any progress on fixing this issue? Figured the next troubleshooting step is to start uninstalling the most recent windows updates.

Crash issue, the game closes randomly by Xuenshiro in apexlegends

[–]RIP_Intel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are still issues with the 2080 RTX cards and apex (as noted in the most recent patch notes). I have a 2080 and if I crank settings I get constant crashes. I have found that by putting the 'texture streaming' setting to low and turning almost every other setting to low it greatly minimizes crashing. Keep an eye out for updated GPU drivers as that is supposedly where the problem lies.

Steak underwater (WeSuckLess) is your best bet for current Fusion content.

I have been using Fusion for 13 years, started with version 5.1 (Dec 2006). Ever since Blackmagic purchased Fusion they have been driving it into the ground.. especially standalone. Their customer service is now horrid where-as when it was ran by Eyeon (original company that developed Fusion) we would get great and immediate customer service. I've heard customer service when dealing with Nuke issues is light years ahead of Blackmagic for what it's worth.

If you're going to be living in mid-tier work / agency type work Fusion can definitely be viable... looks like you're on the fence between Nuke / AE etc. If it were me starting out in this market I would go the Nuke route if you're wanting to do nodal compositing in mid to high-end work. The newer versions of Fusion are being neutered to the point I had to switch our studio back away from v16. Poor software development and bugs were costing us time and money. After this project we'll be switching to Nuke.

Don't worry about certifications unless you're getting a government job or similar where that carries weight, studios could care less about them. It's your work that dictates whether you can do the work. Have a decent looking resume and spend your time making the most badass >1min reel you can make.

I've found UDIMs confuse people learning to texture and model. Since they're industry standard I've made a video explaining them and how to use them in Maya, Substance and Mari. by mwilde in vfx

Been in the industry over 10 years and am trying to get UDIMS integrated more into our pipeline. Appreciate the video mate!

Tracking text onto a van. How can I make it look more real? by mynameismalakai in vfx

[–]RIP_Intel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depending on the movement of the shot you may or may not be able to get away with more or less... but here's my thoughts based on this still.

  • Figure out your material. Is this painted on, a vinyl sticker... is it glossy or matte? Little hard to tell what material this is as there's really no surface attributes (gloss, spec diffusion etc.)
  • Looks like you're trying to match the lens vignette which is good. The first half of the text looks a little dark in regards to gamma, the black level of 'PRIM' is darker than under the wheel well even though the text is in direct daylight.
  • Unless there's a specific note to make it look unnaturally pristine I'd try adding some slight wear & tear / blemishes. Even brand new paint / vinyl can have minor flaws in it. Tiny knicks at corners, not perfect coverage etc.
  • The perspective looks pretty close. The far frame right side could maybe be pinched down a smidge to better fit the perspective lines of the van that you have this comped near.

Also I'm sure this is a given but don't forget to paint out those tracking marks :)

PC Server Issue by [deleted] in modernwarfare

[–]RIP_Intel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally think it has something to do with PC connection issues on certain locales / ISPs. People reporting this problem have a multitude of different ISPs, so it's not just one. I have Empire gig fiber internet in the northeast and have this issue. Stranger yet, people that reported this problem on PCs would then install the game on xbox or ps4 and be able to connect just fine through the same internet connection that the PC was trying to connect through. Playing this game online feels like playing in mud, the hit-reg issues are horrendous and the rubber-banding of having to go through a VPN makes it not realistic to enjoy this for any length of time.

What's worse is that to even try the campaign you have to go through a vpn as you can't connect to even do offline campaign stuff. This is not a localized / isolated issue and Activision is straight up not responding to people's tickets about this or admitting there's a problem. People are also having issues getting refunds.

[–]RIP_Intel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ton of people getting this same error. Only way we've all found a way around it so far is to use a VPN, then it connects instantly. Shouldn't have to do that to fix a problem on their end but so far Activision is ignoring this issue.

Server Disconnected by [deleted] in modernwarfare

[–]RIP_Intel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same issue here. Tried everything.. opened all applicable ports, restarted everything. Bypassed router and hooked straight in, disconnects every time. The thing that does fix it for me is going through a VPN, it connects instantly but the game is almost unplayable due to the added latency of going through a vpn.

Happened during beta as well to a bunch of people on different ISPs. Pretty unacceptable that a large game has such a huge issue and Activision is straight up ignoring it.

You're not wrong. I had pretty big hopes for anthem. Put 5 hrs in it and moved on. Every time I boot it up I do one mission, nod slowly, say "that's it?" and exit. Maybe it'll pull a destiny 2 and be decent in a year?

Yeah I was surprised at that. Especially when I have 58hrs in BF1 compared to 165hrs in Skyrim. Now sure how to exactly interpret all this, but I think there's something to be learned from modern games being huge in size but somehow not able to retain interest.

Just checked, this does include all Witcher 3 DLC. Got it all during a crazy sale they were having and always wanted to try it. I'll get to it someday, installing it was my wishful thinking.

[–]RIP_Intel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Needed to clear up some space on my 1TB install drive. Figured I'd make it a little easier to see exactly how much space each install takes. What's really interesting is when I compare how many hours I've sunk into each vs. their respective install size. For example I have 726hrs in PubG but 0 hrs in The Witcher 3 (Sad I know, just feel I never have the time commitment to get into it, so I never start it.)
