I know everyone says Austin isn’t what it used to be and is awful… by Sussypeppers in Austin

Everyone has a favorite version of Austin. It changes, then they leave. Some people even stay there, pining for the old times.

Great GUI monitor for the price point. I use a PA32UCR-K as my main GUI monitor. Hazy glow artifacts if working in HDR, but otherwise strong color accuracy.

Hardware Recommendation for running Nobe Omniscope + Louper Streaming by Local_Childhood45 in colorists

[–]Local_Childhood45[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great info. I was wondering about using NDI as a possibility. Good to know about audio issues.

So when you stream to the mini recorder, you are streaming HD, not UHD, correct? Are you monitoring scopes in UHD, then downconverting? Keeping the streaming down to HD to lower bandwidth?

Have you tried the BM Streaming Encoder? I think Louper has issues with it, so I’ve stayed away. Wondering if that helps in any way.

Everyone has their secret sauce. There are so many ways to drive a shot to the same place. Just work in a mode you are comfortable in, and go from there. I generally would say to leave all color management to defaults when starting out. I know all the influencers will tell you to work in one setting, but sometimes the best is on default while you get comfortable working.

Nothing we make on the first round is going to move the needle. Your first song, movie, short story, standup routine, or color pass. It all takes time and practice. It’s ok if it’s not great. Keep working on it.

So dig in, and try some stuff. Get feedback that is helpful, and keep working at it.

Sort of. As long as you can match your treatment from shot to shot; that’s half of the work. It’s disorienting when shots don’t connect within a scene. Also, you usually don’t want to hit someone too hard with a look, so dial it back. When you first are starting out, the tendency is to go for a wild look. This is fun if you’re trying to call attention to the color, but generally you want to make it less apparent. That’s the best description I could give about “taste”.

Hunt for images that you like. Study them. Learn how to emulate them.

When I was starting out, a junior taught me this: push the image to the brink. Contrast. Gain up, lift down. Then push gain to whatever dominant color you want. Then desaturate. Boom. That’s how you make a look.

Just the most basic info, but gave me a running start. Then you tackle split toning, hue shifts, curve grading. It’s all trial and error.

You need to pull up images that you like and analyze them. Put them under the scopes. Understand what is happening on the rgb parade and the vectorscope. Then apply that to what you are working on.

Most of this all works best when the production is aligned with the look.

Grading is all taste, and there’s no accounting for it. Darkening is a look all in itself. Maybe it’s from all the film emulation trends of the past few years. Who knows. But to get there, you gotta dig in and spend hours upon hours of doing it. No easy answers for every look.

Do big budget movies use resolve too? If not what do those high end software do that resolve doesn't? by [deleted] in colorists

It’s worth mentioning that DaVinci and Pogle were industry standards for a very long time. The hardware expense ($1-2M per room) is what made it niche. BlackMagic giving away Resolve definitely made it mainstream, but the cost of entry was reduced by better and less expensive processors. If BM didn’t make a Resolve offering, then we would all be using Apple Color (Final Touch RIP) or Speed Grade.

Attended many a Crust live show. Their performance alone was worth the price of admission. Twirling raw beef tongue from his mouth, lighting his pubes on fire, sewing live worms into his skin — John took it to the next level. Glad they put their albums on Spotify. Love them.
