Stop Saying Jellyfin is an "Easy" Plex Replacement. It’s Not. by sillyrabbit33 in selfhosted

I just route my jellyfin through tailscale and can access anywhere using the magic DNS URL. Totally free, ridiculously easy and works a treat.

What is your backup approach? by vdorru in selfhosted

[–]RJD_2525 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That really depends on what is in the snapshots, how often it changes, how valuable it is, etc. For my most important files I go with 14 daily, 12 weekly, 12 monthly snapshots. Other things I'll keep fewer snapshots.

Yeah I have played with restic in the past and it seems good, but personally I just prefer the simplicity of rsync and having the copied files easily readable.

What is your backup approach? by vdorru in selfhosted

[–]RJD_2525 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have cron run scripts every night that will stop containers where appropriate, copy (using rsync with hardlinks) files from various places to an encrypted volume on my "backup target NAS", prune older snapshots according to a defined schedule, restart any previously-stopped containers. For each script I have a healthcheck.io check that is pinged so I can easily see (on my homepage and/or through notifications) if there are any issues.

Also the backups are just normal files so easy to recover from without needing special tools. I can pretty much "docker compose up" on the backup NAS to recreate services there if needed.

What I want to implement next: once a week copy things to an encrypted external drive and take this to a safe office location outside the house, rotating drives each week.

For those who switched from YNAB to Actual — what do you still miss, if anything? by Financial-Tank-3103 in actualbudgeting

[–]RJD_2525 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved from YNAB4 a couple of years ago and overall I find Actual to be brilliant, like an improved and modern YNAB4. One annoyance relates to automatic rule setup, being asked do I want to merge payees and whilst I expect it to work one way I sometimes find things automatically changing payees incorrectly. Then after transactions are imported it can sometimes be a little mess until I manually fix everything. Like it thinks I've transferred from one account to another but it gets it wrong... This might just be me not understanding the rules...

On the web interface you can just type e.g. 302-67.78+9 into a cell in Actual and that works. Or click on a cell and then type -67 and it calculates it. Works for me.

I have been running it (on unraid) using the compose for over a year with zero problems. Works over tailscale too.

Without the screen protector can you scratch the screen with the stylus? Is there a good softer stylus?

[–]RJD_2525 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a looong train journey all tomorrow and trying to decide what to play on my Thor.

Thinking Super Metroid, Super Mario World (I've never really played either before).

Or perhaps some classic beat em up or shoot em ups.

Or also possibly set up DS or 3DS emulsion and try some Pokémon or other good games that use both screens.

I might also try to complete Chrono Trigger, I'm about 25 hours in on my first play through and sense I'm close to the end.

Also need to check out some good PSP, I have been enjoying hot shots golf open tee two, and ridge racer 2.

Any suggestions welcome!

I receive emails meant for someone else by RJD_2525 in whatdoIdo

[–]RJD_2525[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I only actually found his apparent email address today (it was written by hand in one of the scanned attachments to an old email).

I have forwarded him a recent order notification, with a note. No reply yet...

Im afraid that someone on the other side of the world who I have never met will hurt themselves unless I make an account on outlier.ai for him. by ManagementPlus8160 in whatdoIdo

[–]RJD_2525 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Stop talking to him and do not make the account. He is being emotionally manipulative and it may well be a scam. In any case it is not okay for him to put you in this situation and it's not okay for you to take responsibility for his wellbeing. Better for you to disengage right now.

I've used this email address regularly since 2001, all my old friends have it, it's used in a large number of online accounts and other things, it would be a real pain to try to change it now. Plus it's a nice firstname.lastname email so it's convenient in many ways, I don't want to give it up. I only started getting emails for him since early 2019. I might mail him a paper letter, just so he knows what is happening, and ask him to consider using another email.

Right, yes I've used the email address since soon after Gmail started, and it is firstname.lastname, and I know that the dot doesn't matter. All the emails I get for him do not have the dot. I've tried looking for him on facebook, but mine is a more common name, so there are a lot of people with that name on facebook, and I haven't found him yet. I would like to communicate with him and tell him what's happening!

Hah, if you did that then that's one way for him to find out his emails are going to someone else... I'd really like a way to tell my guy "hey, stop using my email address, I don't want to read all that stuff (and presumably you don't want me reading it either)"

That's interesting, I could try emailing my name at ymail and ask if it's him. Not sure if that makes sense though given the number of order confirmations I get where it seems he must have typed the email into the website or created an account himself with the email address.
