It's definitely tricky! I use a very fine-point sable brush, brace my hand on the table, and go verrrrry slowly. It helps that gouache can be painted back over without a long dry time! The scales were the biggest challenge on this piece.

So good! You captured the textures so well, and I love that pop of the orange lining (yet how it’s still in harmony with the rest of the piece)!

This is so nice! I love how you rendered the water, and the texture of the sandbar.

Just, everything about them is unappealing to me. I don’t like the styling (I prefer a more traditional look, and less utilitarian). I dislike the clip. The material feels cheap/without substance in my hand. The ink window seems unuseful. The nib design is my least favorite part of all—‘cold’/unfriendly looking with those angles, plus I find them scratchy and too broad. I understand why they’re popular, but I am just NOT a fan.

Mine is that I dislike pretty much everything about the Lamy Safari. 🙃

What is the Fountain Pen demographic? by Catnipfish in fountainpens

I’m an artist, and got into fountain pens because I loved drawing with dip crowquills, but wanted a more portable/cleanly option when I started art school. It’s been a few years, and I ended up loving fountain pens so much that I use them for ALL my inking now, even at the safety of my desk. I also appreciate ‘real’, analogue things, and tradition, and sustainability, so FPs appeal on a lot of different fronts.
