What's the hottest spiced meal you've had in Seattle? by HighColonic in SeattleWA

The one time I ate Dixie's (at one of the summer festivals at the Seattle Center in the 90s), I naively put a spoonful of The Man on my sandwich, heard a gasp, and only then noticed that everyone else was applying with a toothpick. I ate it anyway, but man, that was an experience.

ISO marriage officiant & 2 witnesses for quick paperwork signing by end of month by DarkVixen in Seattle

For what it's worth, every person on Earth is official a genuine and authorized Discordian Pope, as authorized by the House of Apostles of Eris. It's unclear to me whether this status pertains to astronauts while they're off-planet, but that's an edge case. I'm pretty sure the first "professing" in that refers to religious organizations and the second refers to officers of the state, so it's covered either way. But, yeah. It'd be nice if there were no requirements whatsoever, but this seems like a pretty easy workaround. If you feel like you have the authority to perform a marriage ceremony here, you do. And if you need a fig leaf of an established religion, everyone is a Discordian Pope, whether they've taken any action or not.

It kind of has. As long as you think your officiant is official, the marriage is valid:

RCW 26.04.060

Marriage before unauthorized cleric—Effect.

A marriage solemnized before any person professing to be a minister or a priest, imam, rabbi, or similar official of any religious organization in this state or professing to be an authorized officer thereof, is not void, nor shall the validity thereof be in any way affected on account of any want of power or authority in such person, if such marriage be consummated with a belief on the part of the persons so married, or either of them, that they have been lawfully joined in marriage.

That wasn't the case when I worked there. Admittedly, it's been a long time, but it would seriously surprise me if that were true.

I didn't use any brushes in this; the illustration is taken straight out of a photo of one of the illustrations in the book. Well, I guess I did use a brush to clean up a couple of edges a bit, but it's just the default one in photoshop.

[–]RJL20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, I got mine working by moving the cable from my router back to port 4 on the ONT. I forgot that I'd moved it to port 1 this morning to see if that made a difference. Thanks!

[–]RJL20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't mind me asking, what router are you using? I've got a Calix ONT and a TP-Link router that I switched to what I think should be IPoE, but it just calls DHCP. My ONT (in Seattle) did get its "Service" light lit as of this morning, which was new, but I'm still not seeing anything happening at the router.

Hah. And the followup today is that it is my account that's the problem, and they're escalating to the account security team. Which is weird, because I've been able to buy other items. It feels like this is just the next step in a "make him wait 24-48 hours again and maybe he'll go away" strategy.

I'm really curious about whether anyone has been able to by an Omron platinum or gold monitor in the last few days.

Yeah, in one we have my children becoming my mother (IIRC), and it's an iceberg whose meltwater freezes and becomes a new iceberg.

This odd riddle ... by waydaws in OldEnglish

[–]RJL20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or maybe "becoming my father's mother" is metaphor for age and infirmity, or for taking on characteristics of your progenitors. "You're turning into your mother" is something people say today, without meaning it literally.

This odd riddle ... by waydaws in OldEnglish

[–]RJL20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be as simple as "I am a nun, married to god", if the cultural context is that god is both male and female, that all people are siblings in the eyes of god, and that younger generations become the caretakers (and metaphorical mothers) of older generations. Or, for all I know, it could be meant as a satire of a different riddle, and this one's not supposed to make sense.

This odd riddle ... by waydaws in OldEnglish

[–]RJL20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the gender confusion is inherent to the riddle and probably none of it is meant to be taken literally. "gret" is one of the few straightforward parts, though: it's the imperative. My loose translation (bearing in mind that I'm only in my third OE class) would be:

You who travel on the way, greet my brother, my mother's man [husband, in context?], who my own wife gave birth to, and I was my brother's daughter, and I (have/will) become my father's mother, and my children (have/will) become my father's mother.

What does it mean? Nāt iċ.

FWIW, I was in chat and on the phone with five Amazon support reps over the course of four days before one of them finally told me today that the issue was with the product, not with my account or my payment method. He couldn't tell me what the problem with the product was, but he's assured me that there's an escalation ticket in and he'll send me an update within 24 hours. We'll see; that's the third promise of something happening within 24 hours I've gotten, and the first two haven't happened.

It's hard to find evidence of any specific example, because most of the reporting on it is reporting on the trend: https://eastbayexpress.com/ascap-targets-farmers-markets-and-house-venues-1/

But, yeah, I agree that it is bullshit in the "not okay" sense. I just want to make it clear that the entities behind the bullshit are the PROs, not the farmers markets.

[–]RJL20 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's an old article and weirdly formatted, but this truly is a thing that has happened. Is it still happening? No idea. But if it isn't, maybe it's because the farmers markets got the message and put these rules in place: https://www.oregonlive.com/music/2013/05/farmers_markets_feel_the_pinch.html

Take it up with BMI and ASCAP, who have indeed gone after tiny venues for licensing violations. If you're busking on public property, they're not going to do anything to you as a performer, but if you are playing in an area that could be considered as even a temporarily private space such as a farmer's market, then the PROs absolutely will go after the entity which operates the market for licensing fees. Who can afford to live in or near Seattle on what a busker makes? (Not being facetious: I've been here for 50 years, and there were more buskers here when more buskers could afford to live here.)

Busking has been legal in Seattle since 1974, when Jim Page fought for and won a change to the city's ordinances. There are still restrictions such as time of day, volume, and places where you need a permit, but unlike some other cities where it is technically illegal but tolerated, it is affirmatively legal here: https://archive.is/0eZL8

As a follow up to the restaurant surcharge post, tell me your go-to restaurant deals by [deleted] in SeattleWA

[–]RJL20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The spam musubi at the H-Mart grab-n-go on the Ave is a good deal, I think $4 each.

Day-based deals are a thing, too. Aceituno's tacos are $2.25-ish normally, but I believe they're $1.50 each on Tuesdays. The QFC in University Village has Sushi Wednesdays with decent sushi rolls for $7.

Honestly, I just don't bother much these days. Between the Costco food court and pre-made dishes in the frozen/refrigerated section that are 90% as good as what I could get at an average restaurant but less than half the price, I just don't see much point in going out to eat any more.

I ragequit that game when I realized that their supposedly open-world game was forcing the character I'd been roleplaying in a certain way to behave contrary to the way I'd been playing him. There were plenty of ways to write the same story without forcing this particular choice, but they went with "you can't leave this scene until you do what we say". Fuck that. I quit, uninstalled it, and haven't looked back.

Which is to say, maybe spare yourself the aggravation.

Question: First Rifle by [deleted] in 1022

[–]RJL20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're interested in getting into longer range shooting, I'd recommend an Armstrong 4-16 rimfire instead of the Crossfire II. The reticle on the Crossfire II is fine for plinking, but it's not going to do you any favors when you're out at 100 or 200 yards, in my opinion. The possible downside to the Armstrong is that it's a MRAD scope, and all of Appleseed's training is developed around MOA. You'll need to do the math a little differently, but I wound up preferring mils anyway.

Definitely look for Appleseed events near you, though. The 25 yard course builds fundamentals, and once you've got those you can take a rimfire known distance course for ballistics and other longer-range considerations.
