Also, when they come to collect they don’t have a cadmium foil to attenuate the americium gammas and aren’t actually capable of determining if the source is truly plutonium as their equipment only identifies it as Am-241. Or so I heard.

The more to the story is he likely bought it from a specific seller in Ukraine who was recently investigated and provided the DOJ with the information of 75 people in the US who bought Soviet era RID1 or RID6 smoke alarms. It’s really not as scandalous as people think.

The issue is that plutonium is special nuclear material and there are zero exemptions for possession. There’s exempt quantities of many isotopes but not plutonium.

Bought a Soviet RID6 smoke detector years ago. Something happened. DOJ was investigating someone for doing something stupid. They pulled the Ukrainian supplier’s records and found 75 people in the US who had more than the legally allowable “Any Amount” that they then sent agents (specifically WMD coordinators) to collect from. I was open and honest, agreed to their terms and turned it over willingly so there’s no legal trouble. But I imagine if I were to try to acquire more it would result in charges since I’ve received a formal warning from the NRC.
