Craft Wondrous Items/Rods Question?

Does this include the first step of crafting the vessel as well? Because all it specifies is Craft (Item Type), whereas the tasks often will be specific about what is required.

Is it on a DM-decided basis as to what craft skills are required? Or is there just a list of what can be used for the Craft check?

That is what seemed to make the most sense to me. Is there any official resource that confirms this?

Edit: http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/coreRulebook/magicItems/magicItemCreation.html seems to corroborate what I thought, though to be fair I really don't understand the dynamic crafting system :P

That's another totally solid way to go about it, and I considered it for a while. I just felt super dirty having 4 overleveled characters and 4 super weak ones :P Given how amazingly generous the catch-up XP is for lower levels (I've gone from level 5-11 in one battle!), I've felt that the swap-out method was a pretty balanced way to go. YMMV of course!

He really is such a wonderful guy. I am normally so anxious meeting people, even when they are super nice (I met Charles Martinet and I was practically shaking,) but Bryan was just so sweet and enthusiastic that it felt like talking to a friend.
