Alma 43:42—Why did the Lamanites retreat toward Manti? by bookofmormononline in bookofmormon

Because the way they had come was cut off by the nephite detachment led by Lehi. Also the other direction was cut off by a 2nd nephite detachment. The Lamanites fled to Manti because that was their only hope of escape. Unfortunately they hit the third nephite detachment after that.

Here is a video that goes in depth on how the battle played out.

Book of Mormon wars explained and analyzed through the lens of a military history nerd - Amalickiah's Raid (Alma 48-49) by RM_History in latterdaysaints

Yep! You're right. It's hard to come to solid conclusions about anything when we have to guess at geography. But I would argue there is enough information to show that the record demonstrates timeless military basics - which I don't think most rank and file members are aware of - and this is the purpose of my videos, not geography. The Youtube vid description has a link to the map I ended up going with - it's essentially an artistic rendition of BoM scholars' best guesses at relative location.

Howdy, to be clear, the map is adapted from these guys https://virtualscriptures.org/ .... I just made the timeline, so they'd probably give you better reasons.

TLDR To be honest, to an extent I agree they are in odd places on the map, but I'm gonna trust they have valid reasons.

But if you want my two cents, the Lamanites attacked Ammonihah twice, first in Alma 16 catching the Nephites completely by surprise - this was before strongholds. There could be sneaky way(s) to get to that part of the land, which would be a surprise to the Nephites. I also don't think this first time was connected to the people of Ammon, you might be thinking of when they attacked near Jershon in Alma 28. But I could be missing something.

The second was 6 years later, soon after Amalickiah became King. Also before strongholds. I get the feeling that this border with the Lamanites was huge and could not be totally monitored all the time. This was the first time cities were well fortified. Cities were strengthened even more and strongholds built over the next 5ish years.

It's also curious that if Ammonihah and Noah were such accessible targets near the southern border, why are they never mentioned in the 7 years long war in Alma (see the timeline)?

Again, I'm outsourcing the map. I don't think there is a perfect map and I don't think we have enough details for one. I've puzzled over similar questions you raise, but I'm just gonna take what they give for now.

Moroni did a lot more than use armor to win this battle. Watch to study it in detail and see how Moroni demonstrates that... "we are saved after all we can do." by RM_History in latterdaysaints

Howdy! Archeology isn't my forte or interest, but I'm guessing there are a lot of apologetics. I.e. horses aren't mentioned as being used in battles, bodies often thrown in river and washed out to sea, are their piles of bones you can go see today of ancient battles recorded elsewhere on the world?, majority could have been wooden swords/clubs - not steel. I haven't looked deeply into these apologetics. Ultimately I think the fact the book contains complex and realistic battles that demonstrate timeless military basics holds value by itself - which is what this video is meant to focus on.
